All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

It happens after driving and occurs after about a min or so. I have the selonoids removed but I still have the canister and 2 vacuum lines running off of it to one of the ports on the TB.

Eric (Turbosax2) heard that noise and went WTF a few days ago when I started noticing it. I still have emissions to do so I need to keep the canister in at least. I can always bolt the selonoids up and run a bunch of vacuum line all over to make it look hooked up.

Do you still have anything connected or coming off of the canister at all? Hooked up to the intake pipe still?

Yea my other buddies heard it when car was off and we were all confused found it to be under battery. Then once I got to charcoal canister when taking off emissions, I plugged the vent hole on charcoal canister and it started vibrating (car off), I let go and yu feel air come out and start vibrating. So I believe it means maybe canister is clogged or something? I took out everything including canister.

Hmmm, I'll have to dige down there and look into it. I didn't think the canister could get "clogged" since it's just gas vapors.

Hey man. let me know if changing the rod bearings stop the knock completely. mine is doing the same exact thing but im getting no oil pressure and its over heating from that. let me know ### before i do something i dont want to do. LOL. or text me what happened 440... 654 ....0344

Okay so I think my idioticness destroyed my motor.

I hadn't driven my car in a few days. I checked everything over, added some oil. and I dropped the oil cap back into the slots but didnt turn it to lock it as I went back to check the oil, and I never thought to lock the cap back in..

yeah I'm a freaking dumbass.

I went out and I got on it a couple times then I started hearing a grinding type noise.

I got home and saw oil everywhere and my oil cap sitting just off its spot.
I let it cool down, added oil back in it. Then went back and let it idle. The grinding/chattering noise kept coming from the head, then all of a sudden there was a pop and the noise went away. I turned the car off immediately and when I did, as soon as the motor completely turned off I heard the noise come on for a split second.

I'm so pissed and sick to my stomach over the fact I was such an idiot and could of easily avoided this.

Any idea what I broke? I'm praying its something from the head, it DEFINITELY sounded like it was from the head or timing area but timing area looks perfect.

First the noises.

1) When accelerating but not when coasting I can hear what sounds like metal spinning underneath the shifter from the bottom of the car, is this just the AWD systems normal noises? its not very loud I can hear it when I shut my music off and listen for it.

2) In 3rd with AC on when I accelerate and then take my foot off the pedal and let the engine slow the car down while staying in gear I can hear what sounds like louder exhaust popping. It happens with AC off too but not nearly as much and it only happens when I accelerate in gear then let off and stay in gear around 3k rpm.

On to the couple questions.

I want to jack the talon up to replace the transfer case and tranny fluid this weekend but I have only really ever used lifts and then got rid of my car, I know how to use lifts but on a DSM where do I jack it up and where do I put jackstands to support it?

only going to be working on the front end to replace fluids.

Your second noise sounds like backfiring. Could be a fuel system issue, maybe running too rich.

As for lifting, check out the manual if you have it. If not use the metal strip on the outside edge of the car just behind the front wheels and just in front of the rear wheels.

to #1 i believe it's normal.
My car does this but extremely loud. Its done it since I had it, I tune it out now. Supposedly its kind of typical of 1g's.

I wouldnt worry about it.

Is it similar to this? Listen to the grind noise after I let off the gas and start decelerating - thats when mine usually does it. Mine is very loud, I just ignore it.

YouTube - Eagle Talon runs 12's inside cam

Yea it kind of sounds like that, it sounds like my NT did when I got the cat straight piped. Just sounds like something popping in the exhaust pipe, doesn't sound like backfiring because its not banging its just gargling/growling.

Maybe detonation in the downpipe?

Car is completely stock 1998 talon TSI AWD

is the tranny noise kind of a subtle whining noise? if so i think its normal on dsm's, cause my old ESi did that and i know there were no problems with that car, and my TSi AWD does it too.

To change your tranny fluid you shouldn't jack it unless you're jacking it up so it's level.

The noise you hear I hear and assume it's normal.

And the popping is probally from a rich fuel air ratio. Or if your exhaust is larger then stock could just be that.

Entire car is stock atm, not a single mod.

Also how would I drain the transmission if I don't jack it up? isn't the drain plug on the underside?

Alright, thats what my plan is tomorrow.

I was also thinking perhaps a spring?

If so then its no big deal to me - I bought 272 cams with springs/retainers about a month ago when I thought I was pulling my head thinking I had a blown headgasket to throw in with the new gasket and everything and found out it was just a radiator cap. So looks like I may pull it anyway and get my stuff installed.

Praying for it to just be springs/rocker arm or something!

Well here's what my head looks like.
I'm actually pretty worried that I dont see anything out of place. Worried that I broke something worse.

Any other ideas? :/

I was going to vote a spring but I don't see anything in the pic. You'd think there'd be pieces of metal if you did break something. Maybe you should check your timing area

well i just got a new block the other day with 7k on it and i have a head sitting in the basememnt thats never been touched by a machine shop so the head is going there this week and i should be pulling my old engine real soon and assembeling the new one.

When I changed my tranny fluid I parked over a hole in ground and set my drain pan in there. But the drain plug you can access, it's on the passenger forward side of tranny almost directly below the fill port. If you turn your front wheels all the way to the right and lock them in place you can crawl under there and access it better.

To drain the tranny you need it to be as level as possible to make sure you drain all of it and when you fill it you don't over fill it. By jacking up the front of the car the oil is setting in the rear of the tranny and it drains and fills at the front of tranny.

As for your poping if it's stock, check for intake/exhaust leaks. Test your o2 sensor. If those are okay there are other sensors to test that involve putting fuel into your mixture like CAS, TPS, stuck injector. The popping usually means that there in unburnt fuel making its way into your hot exhaust and "exploding" in it.

i have The Same Problem With Mine except The Clicking Noise Is Coming from Bottom engine Driver Side. hmmm What Could It Be?

OK so I just put on a XTD Stage 4 6 puck unsprung ~1.5k miles ago and it shifts fine, engages perfect, and still holds my 370+whp. Whats wierd is it started just recently to knock when the clutch pedal is depressed and when the clutch is pushed in it stops. Is this normal for a unsprung 6 puck?

It's just clutch chatter. Type it in on youtube and see if it sounds the same. The other thing it could be is the TOB as previously stated. but since it shifts fine I am 95% sure its just chatter.

I had a stock replacement TOB that made a chattery noise for awhile, and then it went to squeaking some before it totally took a dump. All under less than 1000 miles also.
