All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

do all of the timing marks line up?

i would do a boost leak test and check my cam angle sensor.

i think your gonna need a new starter also.

i have heard a similar sound when i saw a car with the timing off a tooth or so.

but i would be checking to make sure my start bolts are loose ^^ two birds with one stone.

Ill check the things you guys said just weird ### when i try to get on the gas the car really dosent want to go anywhere boost will go to 10 psi but car wont really go anywhere. and why check my cam angle sensor?

If your going to check timing I would also check the timing belt tensioner. Mine went out on a pull and it sounded like i had really bad knock. But you could only hear in from 2100-2900 regardless of load. Just some food for thought.

the reason i said cam angle before was because at first i thought it was a tuning issue with an exhaust leak off of the manifold. but now that i listen to it again i hear more of a mechanical failure.

a very primitive but sometimes effective stethoscope i have used was a long extension and put my ear up to isolate where the noise was coming from.

if your car isnt going anywhere at 10psi its most likely due to your knock sensor picking up that noise and retarding the timing to slow your car to a crawl.

Well after watching your video i would say I'm about 75% sure its your flywheel, I've had my timing off by one tooth and it wasn't that kind of noise. It is really easy to check just remove the dust cover from the transmission and wiggle the flywheel, in my opinion it would the the quickest easiest thing to check Good luck

IM going to go out right now and check my flywheel and timming

Well guys took my timming cover off and did some inspecting and this is what i found.....you guys look at these timming marks tell me what u think and if this could be causing my problem

Yea i believe this was the cause of your knocking noise. but you never know there could be more and you wont know until you fix this first.

i would do a leak down or compression test. just to make sure you didn't bend any valves.

i think you should be ok if its only one tooth

well i reset the timming put the new tensinor on started the car up and the noise is still there didnt do a compression test or leak down yet but i need to start looking for a head

if you want you can post another video revving the car now that the timing is fixed one less thing in the way.

if you have isolated the noise to the head..

first i would do a leakdown then i would pop my valve cover off and check the valvetrain out. there's a thread somewhere on this forum on how to change your lifters it tells you how to pop the rocker arms off with a pry bar. i would do that and see where your damage lies.. might be cheaper to rebuild the current head.

found it - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/265060-how-replace-lash-adjusters-lifters.html

Sounds to me like the start of a rod knock. You may have threw a rod bearing. I had the same problem with my 91. I couldnt hear it until I rev'd the motor from like 2000-4000rpm. Just my opinion though.. You may be able to save your crank now if you pull the pan and inspect the bearings. Thats what Id do, and thats what everybody told me to do. If it is a bearing, it WILL get worse and WILL cause damage to other things. Im now in the process of building a built 6 bolt in my situation. Good luck my friend and keep us posted. :thumb:

well i did a compression test today and heres what i got 130 150 150 150 i guess the head is gonna be comming off and i forgot to mention before when it happened the car wouldnt boost at all.

even with 130 in one cylinder you didn't bend a valve.(factory min spec is 121)

if your still convinced its the head, pop the valve cover off and take a look after you remove the rocker arms.

i bet the car boosts now right?

what is it pulling for vacuum at idle when its dead cold and and fully warmed up? also at what rpm is it at, dead cold and fully warmed up?

another video may help..
