All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Don't worry too bad it's just the TOB. I bet its very noticable in the cold, and goes away when you push the clutch pedal like 2 inches or fully. Its just a worn out bearing. btw. T-flush soon maybe!

Well I'm not sure, it's intermittent sometimes.
It will make noise, then sometimes it won't.

Trans fluid is new ish, its on Syncromesh.

Is there any fluids I can run to better solve this issue? I JUST had the trans out, I don't feel like going through all this again.

It was out like a month ago.
Is letting it go until it creates a problem an okay idea?

Lofty, I have the same problem as you. I recently had to replace my clutch and TOB when my PP grenaded. Since then, the sound disappeared for a while but comes back once in a while, so I'm leaning towards a worn out bearing in the tranny. It's been doing it for about a year now and the tranny still shifts and drives fine, but it's just annoying not knowing the root cause.

Trans fluid is new ish, its on Syncromesh.

There's most of your problem. Synchromesh will make your car shift like butter. But, the fluid is too thin to protect the bearings.

Mine does the same thing. I'm just waiting for it to crap out on me since I've got a rebuilt one sitting on my workbench. :D

Ok, so i searched and couldn't find an answer. I noticed about 2 days ago driving home from work (and i wont lie, i do drive her a bit hard at times) and when i would accelerate or take my foot off the gas their is a knock you can hear and feel. I haven't had time to look at it so i been taking it easy on her. I'm suspecting its something dealing with a motor mount but i wanted to hear what you guys thought and if you had any ideas what to look at. :idontknow:

Video and a location would help. It could be anything. Do it at idle, or standing still, or coasting, or only driving fast?

ill see about getting a video today. i get off at 3pm. no its literally everytime i step on the gas and take my foot off the gas, even when i take it easy.

It may be your timing belt. Check the timing belt tensioner or could be a few other things like a rod or messed up valves. It's hard to tell without actually hearing and seeing it. What part of the engine bay is the noise coming from?

no its not an engine tick. its ONE knock or bang when you first step on the gas or take your foot off the gas. and it sounds like its coming from the right side if the engine bay.

Hmm. Im not really sure. The only way I could tell is by actually seeing and hearing it. I've dealt with all kinds of knocking and ticking noises with my 87 camaro as well as my DSM. There is just so many things that could be making that noise.

If you could just hear it, it could be any loose bracket or something like that, but the fact that you can feel it doesn't seem good...video would def help

Could be as easy as your crank pully damper seperating or maybe if you didnt lock tight your flywheel bolts they could be coming out. I've done that before put a new clutch in and forgot to use lock tight alot of work for something so dumb. Anyways I hope that helps.

Im pretty sure its not that. i just check my mounts. the two sides look worn but not shot, front, is still good (just put in a few months back), and the rear is totally shot and torn up. Seeing how it sounded like it was coming from that area, im pretty sure thats the problem. ill let you guys know if that was the problem when i can scrape together the money for one.

ill post one tomorrow morning, my wife's new $600 camera doesnt take video (i know right) so i got my friends digital that will. im 99% sure its the rear motor mount after inspecting the mounts and CV joints.

Yea, its a bad motor mount. The one that usually allow the car to do that though, is the roll stop, which is the front, and the right side motor mount. But, i would just buy the whole Prothane kit for the car, and replace them all.

Yeah i figured that's the problem soon as i saw that mount torn up. I been meaning to get the kit but too lazy i guess. Well i got a reason now. hahaha

If you listen carefully in the first couple seconds, you can hear a more faint version of the sound at idle, but it becomes much more apparent and obvious on the decel when the motor is revved. Aprox area where sound could be coming from is right above the bell housing on the tranny....

I just put a new motor in and noticed my pressure plate and flywheel have significant heatspots, and after torquing the pressureplate down, the teeth still don't sit flat. Yes, I know I need a whole new clutch/pp/flywheel, but the car has never made this sound before.
