I just bought two DSM's one is a 90 gsx, and the other is a 92 Talon 2.0L N\T. Or so I thought. I'm planning on keeping the gsx but the talon I just want for a gas mileage car while I refine my eclipse. Here's my problem. It turns out the hillbilly who I bought the talon from swapped a non-turbo engine into the car when it was a turbo car not changing anything but the engine...:notgood:

So now I have dumped a nice chunk of money to get my talon running sub-par. It has a turbo ECU and wiring and a n\t engine. So the idle stay's high and it blows double the legal emissions so I cant get it registered. And I don't want my money to go to waste and the car runs damn good considering the issue.

So my question to the DSM gods is, what is the easiest\cheapest\best way to fix this @(#$*in problem??? Add a turbo? Chance ECU and or wiring? or what? I need advice

Best thing to do would be to just put a Turbo engine back in dont know bout it being the cheapest though and just slapping on a turbo is not going to solve anything plus its expensive... And I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure that a non turbo can't just be slapped on some one correct me if I'm wrong not to familiar with 1g's. Should have test drove the car man :nono: How did you come to the conclusion that it had been swaped??? Any Pics of the motor?

I did test drive it. I bought it planning on it being a beater that just got me around. Weird thing is it drove fine when I first bought it after I got it home and started doing maintenance on it stuff started going bad and not working properly.

I don't know how they pulled that garbage off but yes in hindsight maybe I should have taken it to a mechanic and had him do a check of everything before I got too far into it but now i'm here up a creek.

And I could put a pic of the engine up but its just a 2.0L 4g63 DOHC nothin odd. To answer your other question after I failed emissions I took it to midas and had them fix the exhaust leak etc. and they said the ecu was throwing up crazy codes and they said the engine was swapped claiming it was a turbo car because of the comp. and the gauge cluster boost gauge. Which I noticed before I bought it but just thought it was a fluke

thanx for the reply

I actually saw that thread and skimmed through it thinking it was along the lines of my problem but much bigger being that its an engine swap to turbo instead of the other way around, after your reply I read through it thoroughly and found it actually had just the info I needed I just need to reverse what he did.

Thanx a lot for bringing that back to my attention.:hellyeah: I went to the junk yard and grabbed a non-turbo ECU swapped it out and it seems to be running much smoother and the exhaust is not so rich anymore. I think it fixed the problem. I'm going to get the emissions retested tomorrow I'll let you know how it goes. Now just have to figure out why the idle wont go down.

Thanks again for the help :thumb:

Sounds like your first DSM. Welcome to the world of one amazing night, and the other six nights on the jack stands fixing it.

You have another DSM thats turbo'd. Just pull its motor first fix all the leaks. New gaskets all the maintenance, timing belt water pump etc. Pulling one motor and swapping another isnt rocket science. It will not be as difficult as your thinking unless redneck hacked the wiring etc. If its got the original Harness and ECU just put the turbo motor in and be done.

It may be as simple as putting some 450cc injectors and a turbo FPR on the car. The turbo ECU will run fine without ever seeing any boost.

However, you should check and make sure that it isn't hacked up more than just the engine being changed. To work right you still need the turbo MAF and the injector resistor pack.

:hellyeah: Glad to hear good luck with the test

Lmfao! ya its already had its share of time on the stands even before its registered.:D

Well I swapped out the ECU for a non turbo one, and it passed emissions easily! But it still has an idle attitude and is overheating after about an hour. So on with the diagnosis.:hmm: Atleast its registered now.

Ironically according to maviski the MAF in the non turbo has six wires and the turbo has seven. Mine has six. So apparently they changed the harness too but put the wrong ECU in it.....WTF

working on cars is fairly simple. I mean there is a protocol so to speak. The worst problem to deal with is when some homegrown engineer modifies their vehicle with no regard to anyone that must fix his/her car later! The shadetree mechanic is not a bad thing in fact I am guilty of it sometimes, but don't think that you will be the last person to work on that car, so label, write instructions, or so forth so the next person knows what the smeck you did!

That's definitely what the guy before me should have done! No point in me doing that I'm restoring it back to the way its supposed to be. And if the shadetree mechanic is competent it's prob more than likely more reliable than a shop that doesn't give a rats ass. But some jobs are beyond a non mechanic and I know when I'm in above my head.(and my tool capacity)

Haha sooo true. Yep sure enough you were right. The VIN indicates it has always been a non-turbo car. It was becoming more and more clear through the repairs now I know for sure. Midas is full of $#!* man. Good call

Ya too bad it was like pulling teeth to get this far. Still got a little ways to go but at least it will be that much more sweet when its all good.
