ive searched to try to diagnose this myself with no luck so any help is appreciated. iv got a 95 eclipse rs 140,000 miles with no mods and a recent tune up.
-new water pump
-radiator
-all belts
-oil change

now the problem is at idle it knocks wierd. only at idle though. it almost feels like hitting bumps in the road but i can feel it while not moving. its not a tick or a ding, its a definate knock. im not 100% on where its coming from. it'll run fine until under 1000 rpm then it'll knock 4 or 5 times with about 1 second in between each knock. it gets worse every dayand im scared its about to pop.

i know its not bad timing becuase i lined it up perfectly over 2months ago.

also it doesnt bog down or try to die. it justs knocks. i didn't notice any silvery residue in the oil either but i wasnt really looking.

another unrelated problem is that its gettin hard to go into 3rd an reverse is grinding and poppin out. should i get a new clutch or what?

thanks for the help

you said that it only knocks at idle, it go's away as you increase throttle? as far as the clutch goes look under the dash and see if you see a leak on the inner firewall if you see a leak then you need a new master cyl. for sure next check under the rubber boot ont he clutch slave cyl. and see if its leaking there if so then replace if no leaks then i would try bleeding the sys.

ok so there is no clutch fluid leaking anywhere. iv had it for about three months and the clutch fluid has remained full without me messin with it. it sounds like a galloping horse now and when i come to a complete stop and start to go again it'll pop really loud when the clutch grabs.

Could be the throw out bearing. You will have to pull the tranny to check. Make sure the spring clip is still attached and that the bearing hasn't cracked or is sliding around on the shaft.

iv been researching on that. i don't have the means to do everything that you said but i read that you canpull the spark plug wire and see if the noise changes and doing this i noticed a spark plug wasn't tightened down so i fixedit and the noise went away significantly but is still slightly their.i cound't tell if the noise went away while i pulled each wire cus the engine ran like such crap and would barely stay alive.

you have to ground the spark in order to do it right, if it gets quieter or goes away, it is rod bearings, if it gets louder that would be piston slap...do you hear any noise in the tail pipe? does the noise change when you play with the clutch pedal?
