Hey guys in the next couple of weeks im going to tear down my talon and build the motor and head. But i have a few questions before i order my supplies. First i was wondering if i should bore the block over at all, the block is perfectly fine as it sits. I was wondering if it is worth the money to get it done. Second what its the piston and rod combos that people are going with right now, i no every company has there horror stories seen that in person. Just wondering what popular nowadays.

I would bore over .020 just so you know your piston and wall clearances will be ok. Dont have it bored over until you have the pistons in hand though. As far as your choices, Im personally a big fan of manley pistons and rods. But eagles and weiscos are not bad either. Really depends on what kind of power you plan on making before anybody can suggest anything.

Thank you for the advise, i would probably be aiming for the 400-450 range for horsepower

With the usual wiseco/eagle/arp combo, and a decent turbo, 500 is easily possible. But settle on a good set of pistons and rods, and take those up to a good machine shop with your block so they can machine to the actuals.

Just about any forged internals will work, personally Im partial to Ross/Eagle/ARP setup. And do not order anything at all until you take it to a machine shop! Have the block checked and only bored if needed, why waste the extra money and material off of the block if you don't have to. Also if it is going to be bored over have them remag the block because it is possible for there to not be enough material and a crack to develop, yes I have had this happen and ended up with a different block. Once its bored then I'd order the pistons knowing its ok and the machine shop can hone the piston to wall clearance in once you take them the pistons.

Bore if need be!.. As you can see everyone has different combos they prefer. Im a CP/Manley/ARP person haha. But any combo you choose I'm sure will get your goals. But my most important suggestion would to be sure to get a GOOD harmonic balancer!.. It's something most ppl look right over

So it doesn't matter if i have the pistons before i take it to the shop? If they need to bore then i can order the correct pistons and they can machine to the actual size?

I say you decide first if your going to bore or not?.. Most GOOD machinist won't touch the block until they get the pistons and rods. At that point they assemble them and will match the bore specifically for each individual piston. (for instance piston A only goes in cylinder 1, so they bore cylinder 1 for piston A only). . . A lot of ppl think the pistons are 100% perfect all the time. WRONG!. So decide what combo you want and order then bring to the machine shop. IMO

This is how I perfer to do it,

1) Have the block checked, and bore if needed (but not honed)
2) order and recive pistons
3) Hone the block to proper PTW clearance

I have borred alot of blocks over the years, Customers may want a .020 bore, but the block will not clear up unless bored .030

When a block is bored, it is bored .003-.004 under the target bore, That way when honed, all the tooling marks from the boring procedure are removed, and proper PTW clearance can be achived.
