I'm looking to build a motor for my 1997 GS-T. It has an automatic transmission. I'm not planning on beating or racing the car, however I want the power in case its ever needed! I'm looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of 400-500hp, but I am looking to spend only about $2,500 total, is that even possible? I already have a Walbro 255 in the tank. But other than that I have to start from scratch. Is there anyone out there that can make me a build sheet? I have some suspension work already done too. So I'm looking for a motor build sheet. Clearances etc. I'm sorta taking a shot in the dark and I kno I'm going to have to send the head out to be machined, so a good place to have that work done would be good to. I'm going to use the stock 7bolt block and the 2G head. thank you to anyone that could help me it would be very much appreciated, I want something like a checklist I can cross off as I go type of sheet... thanks again!

also check out the for sale section here for used stuff. I dont have a whole lot of brand new parts on my car. I pretty much built it from the for sale section here. LOL. Saves alot of money.

What you need to do is to start to resarch your build. Everything comes with a price. The more HP equals more money. Why 400 to 500 hp?Is that crank HP or wheel hp?you plan on running pump gas or E85?Is this a weekend car or a dailey driver. Once you start to make that much HP on the engine will the transmission and clutch hold that much power. What about the breaks, the steering Etc..Right now I'm in the process of building a stroker engine and so far I have got half the parts for the bottom purchased and I'm well over a thousand dollars and I have a long way to go. But on the other hand I'm building the car so it's reliable to use.( No ebay shit or even used parts) I have no idea were I"m going in terms of HP only thing I do know is that it's going to be a lot more than stock. Once the engine is done than I will go back and configure the rest of the cor.An example of this is choosing the cams for the engine I will figure my Rpm range that I will drive in figure the gearing in the transmission and even the height of the tires. The key here is total package. You don't need a build sheet what you need are goals. good luck to you hope this helps.

This is mostly going to be a weekend/show car.. I dont know enough about building engines to know clearances, sizes etc.. Maybe I should just get a stock motor offline (like a JDM) or a rebuilt one, and then add my own bolt-on mods. I want a fast car, I would like enough power to get into the 13's in the 1/4mile! Has anyone delt with JDM, is it a trusted way to go? I'm running an automatic trans, I'mn interested in swappin to a 5spd, but I have no idea what all is involved. I have goals for my car, just not sure I have the resources to reach all of them.

i see how your wanting a high horsepower DSM but honestly, the best way to start your build IS TOO READ AND DO RESEARCH on what you want out of this car becuase you can buy all the best parts but if you have no idea on how they work i guarntee that somebody in your area will get a hell of a deal becuase you put all these parts into your car and you have NO IDEA how to tune or how to know when something is'nt right, you will just get frustrated and sell it for cheap! So do your self a favor and RESEARCH every aspect of what you want to do. Somebody once told me "SPEED COSTS, HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO"? If your car is going to be a weekend show car than 300hp is really alot for a streetcar. It does'nt take alot of MODS to get there and you can save some money so you can do maintence which should be your 1st mod. Im not trying to be a d*ck but JUST READ AND RESEARCH!!! And when your ready to start modding you will have the piece of mind to know what and how the part you put on DSM works. GOOD LUCK MAN KEEP US UPDATED a

The 400-500HP mark is a bit high for someone looking to make that power with $2500. We're talking making it in an Automatic (entirely possible, and honestly best as the Automatic transmissions are stout), for a cheap price, in a Front Wheel Drive turbo vehicle. Are you aware of the suspension work that it will take to keep the front wheels planted to the pavement to get that power transferred properly? Or the amount of supporting mods you'll need? The size/flow rate of turbos that can support that? How about proper internal work to support that power?

You're looking at some money. You'd be best to invest that cash in a Tuning Solution, Fuel Upgrades, A Turbo Upgrade, A Wideband, Intake Upgrades, Porting, Exhaust, Suspension work, and best of all - Basic Maintenance.

Don't try to make power on the cheap. When you destroy your engine or transmission doing this then you'll learn.

K well I checked out the tech guide from the above post. Its gives me the things I need to make what I'm looking for and how much it's going to cost to get me there. Thank you to all of you for your help and I'll do what I can to keep an update on the progress I'm making! However I wont be doing much right away as not only am I paying to get my 97 GS-T back from someone I sold it to 2yrs ago, I am also paying on a loan I have taken out on my 03 GTS! haha thanks again guys!!

So I finally have my bills caught up and can start to focus on my engine build.. I have a slight change in plans, Im not putting a budget on my build, But what I want to do, is build it to just under the point of having to have it professionally tuned. I want to start it up and drive it out of my garage! Right now Im saving for my pistons and rods.. Then its off to the machine shop to have the block cleaned up!

Perhaps if you think of it this way. The 300 horsepower at the wheels range is very close to DOUBLE the horsepower that your car came from the factory with. the stock internals (pistons and rods and things) are capable of handling well over this range, but this is already past where you need professional (or at least competent) tuning. a good tuning software or computer (there are several options, my personal choice is dsmlink or i suppose ecmlink now for low cost and good usability) paired with the previously mentioned competent tuning is important at power levels that are below the level where the things you are talking about having done become important. tuning is probably less expensive as well.

oh and I also want to re-emphasize maintenance. people have already said it but all the forged pistons in the world will not prevent a bad water pump from causing your engine to overheat and your head gasket to blow
