Ok well I'm still in the early stages of my build right now and I'm coming up to the engine bay paint stage.:barf: I was wondering what kind of experience people have with dupli color paints and spray paints in general before I get started. I've been looking around for weeks for any tech type articals that'll point me in a good direction but I've come up empty so far.
I've almost got the paint completely stripped out of my engine bay with circa 1850 paint remover and will be coming to the priming stage tomorrow, I have a couple new cans of Dupli-color sandable primer that I was planning on using, but I'm hesitant on it......stripping paint is not very fun. The only reason I'm even going this way is because I have a crappy air fed paint gun and a completely and utterly uselessly small air compressor. Could some one give me a little advise as taking it to a body shop is completely out of the question.
thanx in advance

I really think that tuners needs a auto body tech archive, I've seen a lot of builds with some amazing body work done that could really point us noobies in a good direction. Moderators please consider it!

I used spray paint on mine also. When painting you wanna prime first roughly cover the area then wait for it to dry then do another coat of primer it should be almost fully covered if not all the way primed then wait again dont rush it though you may want to. final prime just ensure you cover the area fully and evenly at the same distance for the surface. next youll want to paint using the same principles and do not rush it. take your time and youll be happy with thr finished product. remember youre not trying to cover the whole engone bay woth the 1st and 2nd coats its the finals coats that will make it look nice so just keep steady hands and dont spray the same spot for very long. thats my .02 :)

thanx for the help everyone, you've put my mind at ease on using spray paint. At first I had thought about using a rusting chemical to rust up the bay and clear coat over top just to do something different....but then I thought about it and decided that way usually suite very select cars like bmw's etc.

@smoochdarling- I kinda of want my bay to be shinny so I'm not going to Por 15 it, But I will be doing that to the inside of my front fenders to completely eliminate any future rust problems.

Here's a picture of POR-15 applied with a roller:

Is that shiny enough? Check out the mirror reflection of the plastic on the ground on the rear crossmember.

I did the engine bay first and then used the extra for all my fender wells. The POR-15 is super durable and will be way better than spray paint. It does cost a lot more, but if you're already getting some to do your fenders, you might as well use it for the engine bay also.

Here is my pics of doing my bay with dupla color. Turned out really nice. Except for the over spray in the creases. Nothing some 3k grit sand paper can't fix.

What kind of primer you use? before I decided to strip the paint out of my bay I did a little section with dupli color sandable primer and when I tried sanding it a couple days later it just gummed up etc and ruined everything.

ok well after debating what I wanted to do I went with dupli color truck bed liner spray for durability and it would go with the look I want. I started off by using gunk engine degreaser which you just pressure wash off, so I did that after the alotted 15 min soak time. Then I scrubbed the whole thing with brake clean dried it off then blew the whole engine bay off with an air gun. I sprayed the bay with 3 coats of primer waiting the appropriate time between coats, then started to apply the truck bed liner with 3 coats as well once again following the directions to a T. Here's how it came out....

48 hours after being sprayed.
But there's A problem the bed liner just scraps off at the slightest abrasion which is not good!

Was hoping it would dry tough so I wouldn't have to spend the extra $130 on the sealer but looks like that's my last option to save this build as it stands now.
Opinions anyone?

How high was the humidity when the liner was applied? Also, how long did the surface have to dry (even after blow drying) before the liner was applied?

It sat for 15 hours before primer application and that was after being completely wiped dry and blown off. It's to the point where if this doesnt turn out as everything else hasn't I'm scraping everything and walking away.

I'm in no mood to scrape it all off again to start over, so it's a little passed the point of POR-15.......which I should have just used in the first place.
