Engine Balancing Question

I'm in the process of rebuilding my engine. I'm going with a 2g piston / 1g rod combo from dsmgraveyard. On the site it says that they're balanced to within .1 gram. Does this mean that I just need to have the machine shop balance the crank with the pulley and flywheel? Do they need the flywheel to properly balance it?

Here is a list of what you need but it always a good idea to ask the machine shop just to make sure.

Block
Crankshaft
Connecting rod bearings
Connecting rods
Pistons and piston pins
Piston rings
Flywheel/clutch
Harmonic balancer

if the rods and pistons are balanced with in .1g all you need to take to the shop to have balanced is the crank pulley,crank, flywheel, and clutch pressure plate along with all the bolts needed to mount it all together.

OP, i noticed you're not too far from me, which shop is doing the work?

EDIT: It wouldn't hurt to have the whole rotating assembly checked while you're there. I know the graveyard claims .1G, but it never hurts to be sure.

I would call the shop and see what they want you to bring.
At least have the shop clean out the oil passages while its there, used cranks can have build up that will kill your rod bearing oil flow.

Okay, I will indeed have the shop check to verify the .1 and have the rest of the bottom balanced with the flywheel pressure plate etc. Thanks guys.

I'm having Precision in Dighton do the work, they were recommended by some of the guys on the newengdsm forums. Where in RI are you? I'm moving to Middletown shortly when summer arrives.

I've dealt with precision in the past.

They do good work and have a decent reputation, just be clear on exactly what you're getting for your dollar.

I got a quote from them for a simple 500hp SBC (goal was 700 w/ nitrous) about 3-4 years ago, and they tried to charge me $2500 in machine work when i was providing the heads, ready to go. All they had to do was some basic bore/hone, align bore, and assembly (w/ balancing). If you're a young guy, they might try to pork you on the price.

Needless to say, i went elsewhere and paid less than half.

It's Randy...and i can't remember the other guy's name. Personally i don't like them at all, but they are known for good work, and at the end of the day, that's the important part.
