alright so i'm laying in bed last night and i was thinking, why hasnt somebody developed an electric turbocharger? something like a vacuum cleaner ya know. they put out tons of air (on the blower side of course) why not integrate something like that into the intake system of a car? it wouldnt have the parasitic power loss that turbos(even though small) and superchargers take from the engine. not necessarily a DSM but any car in general.

anybody know why something like this hasnt been developed. with the exception of those small and underpowered tornado things people put in their intake pipes to "increase fuel economy" and what not

any info would be appreciated

OK guys, I know you've herd of them. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with them. I kinda want to get an N/A car again just for the hell of it, also a hella lot cheaper of a hobby, LOL (still keeping the gst of course). I see these superchargers on ebay all the time for about $130 and they claim to produce 20-40hp pushing a little over 2psi(weak), but still, it would be kind of fun to play with. Plus my buddy is trying to find some cheap horsepower for his "Honda" civic, also "weak" (in most cases). I didn't know where else to post this because it is still "technically" considered forced induction.

You'll want to read that thread, including all its contained links.

And before you look at the "e-RAM" claims (i.e. their dyno chart), look at the actual numbers - and ask yourself if that will be "felt" on a street-car? Now, look at their "testimonials." A good proportion are subjective (i.e. "car felt stronger/faster"), and another significant portion are based on rather conditional testing (i.e. speedometer readings, GTech, etc.). Now look at their guaranty/warranty stipulations, read carefully and look at the loopholes.

Will it give you a little bit of extra HP? IMHO, probably.

Will you feel the power increase? IMHO, not likely - total placeebo effect.

All of the incosequential conjecture in the world will never make something so stupid become resonable.

Defiant you never cease to crack me up.

They are a silly idea to beqin with which has already been explained in great detail in this very thread. On an NA car this is worthless but on a fine forced induction vehicle such as ours this would cause a negative effect. I'm hoping that no one was suggesting to do this on a turbocharged vehicle.

i think it all boils down to efficiency. yes it can be done and people are doing it now. but we know of other ways to do the same thing in a better way and for a cheaper price. it's pretty much the same thing as asking if you could walk from florida to miami. yes it most definately can be done, but there are better, more efficient, less time consuming ways to do it.

if we didn't have turbos or regular pulley driven superchargers around, then sure, it would be something that would give you more power. but wtf? let's stick to things that are more efficient.

i remember a few years ago back when i had never even heard of an electric supercharger and the idea dawned on me.. but then after considering all the added weight for battery(ies), alternator(s), and the amount of power required to put out just a little power, i quickly threw that idea right out the window.

but hey, it's all a matter of opinion. if that's your thing then go for it. just don't cry when you get beat by a civic with vtec ROFL

It's so lonely out here.

Hey OP, do you know what kind of CFM a 300hp 2l motor consumes? And what it takes to pressurize said CFM to, say, 15lbs.?

You're talking one bigass fan...

:dsm: I am outraged! ha. I can not believe I am seeing some "Car-Guys" actually defending these electric turbochargers. If anyone actually purchases one, be done with it and buy a Hyundai. ROFL

I have a video of someone making a home made electirc blower, on honda civic. I'll see if I can find it. To make a long story short. It lasted like a minute till it fell a part (melted, broke apart). I'll see if I can find it when I get home.

One've my friends said he was looking at electric superchargers for his car, said they were universal...anyone have any experience or comments on these?

man...NO

just no...
