egt probe, other options

is the egt probe the only way to get exhaust gas temps??? I figure it is, but can you put it in other places other than right at the exhaust manifold and still get an accurate reading?

In the exhaust mani is the best place to put it. If you try and put it in the down pipe you will not get accurate readings because the gasses will have cooled off some by then. So in the exhaust manifold in cylinder #1 runner is the best place.

the whole theory behind putting it in runner #1 is to gather data at the hottest cylinder. When your car is giong to lean out, #1 cylinder will be the first to go, that is why you put the EGT probe there. So when something is about to go wrong, your gauge will show that.

DSMJim gave a really good point in an thread a while back. He stated that it is the same thing when putting it in the o2 or dp. Basically, although your EGT's will be cooler, the theory is still there. instead of 1600*F on cyl 1, your DP will read 1250*F. The theory is that on a properly tuned car, the 1250*F is what your "norm" will be. If it goes above it, regardless of what temperature, you know you are running too lean.

The only theory is that the temperature should remain constant, and putting it in your downpipe will avoid the potential disaster of ruining your turbine wheel should the probe fail.

so what about the exhaust temp at teh cat??? any approx? or should I put it in there, then set kind of a target based on what it is now and then when I tune it know that it can't get above that mark I set? wouldn't that work?...I ask cause I don't wanna drill into a header I'm going to have to sell and I have a gutted cat I don't mind drilling into

stop being a sissy just drill into whatever place you want, then buy a brass plug when you want to plug it up.

*edit* I just noticed you're NT (profile updated?), but why would you need an EGT for an NA application?

Makes sense now, goodluck on the project. . Seriously though, before I had an EGT probe (I knew I was gonna get one eventually), I had to take the turbo off of the car for a bit. At that particular time I just drilled / tapped a hole to prep for the probe when I had time to order one. I then went to ACE hardware and bought a brass plug and used that in place. So I definitely recommend the same.

An EGT gauge is an EGT gauge.. The probe does make a difference however. i personally am going with a defi one because it is so purty

TRE > all other EGT probes, hands down. Also, the BEST feature I've found on any gauge (no matter how fancy it is) is the peak/hold function. This is great when you are out tuning your car and after a pull, you can go to your peak setting and find out what your max temp was
