well my check engine light came on this morning and the car has been running kinda crappy the last day or so, so i went and got the free port scan from autozone, it said my EGR valve was bad. so my question is which is the EGR ? or is it the thing further down that the intake is covering. where would you suggest getting one, Autozone said they are 185.00, anywhere better/cheaper? is it hard to do? i would prefer to do it myself if i can save some money.

The lower circle is the EGR control solenoid. The valve itself is the thing that the intake is covering; there is a metal tube coming from the valve that goes up to your intake manifold.

If you'd like to fix it, only four bolts hold everything in - you could do it in under an hour or so. The gaskets will probably crumble when you take everything off, so get those too.

$180.00 is an awful lot for an EGR valve, though. I would sooner block the whole system off than spend that much on a new valve. It's function isn't crucial to the performance of your car whatsoever, but you would need to deal with the CEL if it bother you.

A block-off kit can be had for $20 from either eBay or Concept Illusions (http://www.conceptillusions.com/).

Thanks. im looking around right now and i have found it for 100.00 maybe less if i keep looking.

If you try to fix and it still dosent work I would just bock it off. Also there are 5 bolts. Two on the valve holding it to the head. Two on the intake holdint it there and one about halfway up the metal pipe bolting it to your head. Dont take the first four off and go pulling the thing hard to get it out there is still one more.

Forgot about that one...

Just take it off, clean it with carb cleaner until the plunger moves freely and put it back on. if you dont screw up the gaskets too much you can reuse them. Also check and make sure that the vac hose from the EGR solenoid (lower circle) to the EGR valve isnt kinked, cracked or blocked.

I would try this first since its usually the problem. No reason to spend 100+ on a part when a 2 dollar can of carb cleaner will fix it.

I'll give that a shot 1stgenrocks, and thanks selmer that helps. i will try to work on this tomorrow otherwise during the week, the car will have to sit for a few days.

You can drive it just fine with the CEL on. I've been driving my bad EGR for about a year now. You also might want to check the EGR vaccume selanoid, mine is bad and my EGR is fine, but it still throws the bad EGR CEL. You can check this by starting the engine, removing the selanoid from the EGR, but leaving the vac line to the intake manifold on. It should produce vacume to the EGR hose after a certain RPM, you'll need to pull the throtle cable to revv while your under there.

Try this first though :thumb:

It was 185.00 at autozone but their website had it for 90.00, so i called and bitched about it so they price matched it and i paid 90.
