I was talking to my mechanic today and we got on the discussion about the egr valve. According to him it is bad to block it off because it cools down the combustion chamber. He said by blocking it off you can cause detination. What do you guys think of this? I know alot of you have it blocked off. Is it really that dangerous?

This is just a guess, but I would say that it would not cause detonation. Have you seen the passage in the intake manifold that goes to the EGR valve? Its small. Not enough to make a difference in cooling when blocking it off.
If im wrong, someone tell me.

i know that one of our sponser vendors do, i went back to check and i couldnt find which one it was; sorry didnt want to look them all up again. almost positive that one of them does. i saw it this morning look for parts and doing some research while at work :shhh: dont tell my boss. :thumb:

Your mechanic is absolutly right and as some other people have mentioned in some posts and links as to what it does.

EGR acctually reduces your EGT, and increases your gas mileage. There is a performance gain but you have to be prepared to take the good along with the bad and take this into account when your tuning your car.

Obi-wan has spoken :talon:

Think about what it happening inside the motor when the EGR is on:

About 10% of the exhaust that comes out of the motor goes back into the intake manifold. This exhaust gas can be as hot as 1000*F (considering you're not at WOT), and the intake air may only be 100*F. Now, when those two gasses combine, what do you end up with? The intake air can have a temp rise of over 100 degrees F! That's not a good thing.

However, this has a couple effects when turned on. For one, as already said, it reduces the VE of the motor, so you get a cooler EGT due to less mass in the cylindr actually doing cool stuff. Second of all, it makes the motor heat up warmer, because hot gasses are going through it (this helps, especally when it is cold out).

Now, let's consider something else: The EGR IS NOT OPEN AT WOT!! Think about it. The EGR is a vacuum activated device. If you don't have any vacuum going to it (which you sure don't when you are in boost), then it's not going to be open! For this reason, anyone who says removing the EGR will give you detonation at WOT is wrong. Removing it doesn't change the mixture at WOT ONE BIT. Not at all. It wasn't open before, and it won't be open after.

Removing it may slightly decrease you gas mileage because you will be using the whole motor instead of 90% of it. However, the pros of removing vacuum lines, eliminating a possible boost leak, and eliminating a big source of carbon buildup are well worth it.

Yeah, Dejon Tool has them for $10 shipped. Well worth the money as opposed to the hastle of making your own.

It only take's around 5 minutes to make one :p

Hassle? Cutting out a pieace of metal and drilling two holes is hardly a hassle. It's not like it has to look pretty or anything, no one is ever gonna see it. I made mine for free from some scrap metal at my work.

Right, and not everyone has scrap metal at work and the tools to cut it.

Maybe it would take 10 min. if you used a pop can, but Dejon Tool's is much nicer than that. They used 1/8" thick aluminum and they took a grinder to all the edges. IMO, $10 was well worth me not having to go looking for scrap metal, and then the tools, and then the time.

So isn't mine. I took some 1/8" aluminum, cut it out, and grinded the edges flat. Wasn't very hard.

hell i just found a big old door hinge in my garage and cut it to fit...you can use the gasket as a templet and it just takes a few....if you have some friends that want one too just go to lowes and pitch in for a sheet up aluminum and make a bunch of them. DIY ownz

How much would a sheet of 1/8" in aluminum cost? I am thinking about making a bunch and selling them, but only if I'm gonna make a little profit.
