ECU Swap

I have a 98 GS. I blew my ECU. I bought a 97 GS ecu that came with the same type of tranny. I just got the ECU in the mail today. I put it in and now the engine shakes the whole car when idling. It sounds like it's running bad and back fires when I give it a little gas. Does it take time for the ECU to relearn this new engine from the old guys car, or is it that I need to get an ECU with the same numbers on it from 98. I don't think that is the case thought but that is what I am finding out.

Double check and make sure all harnesses are connected securely. Something similar happend to me.

I reconnected it 3 times before i went to work, i will try again when i get home, i called the dealership service just to see what they say, they told me that i have to have the same model number of the ecu to work, but i read acouple articles that you just have to run it for a couple days and it will relearn your engine.

I've heard something about 97 ecus being different, but I don't know how. Howell Automotive sells an aftermarket ecu, but It will not work on any other year except the 97, so maybe the stock ones are the same. I would e-mail them, and ask them.

i don't think a 97 will work with your 98. but a 99 will work

get a MegaSquirt...they read the 420A crank signal now...and you have full control, if you use a 4g63 ignitor...much better gains...and hard to beat at $300 for a full standalone...but it is more difficult to setup obviously
