Are you just refering to the capacitors needing replaced or are there multiple components shot and not working?

Here is a handy read if you are looking to replace the caps.

im not too shor but i think i just need to replace the capacitors. but my car wolnt start at all. and when it did it would shut off after 5 min of running

You would have to do some more work on your end to make sure it isnt something non-ecu related. Check for all the basics and make sure everything is plugged in and correct.

Have you pulled the ECU and looked at the capacitors to see if they are leaking? Those damn things can cause a lot of problems.

If they are not leaking and everything else looks good with the car you could probably sent it somewhere to have it bench tested. I know of atleast one person on this site that can do it but you need to figure out a lot more before you resort to that.

Good luck, post up your progress and findings.

You can't tell 100% if the capacitors haven't leaked. You can tell when they have if it's really bad or you know what to look for. The only thing you know for sure if it looks good and has the original capacitors is that they need to be replaced.

Click on webpage link below to see some examples of what happens when the caps leak.

thanks eric for the fuel rail and i'm glad we could help you out. It's nice to see another DSM in the lake county area...especially one so clean thats never left the family.

Check out the site on changing the capacitors. http://www.tmo.com/howto/ecu1g/caps.htm

...but if it were me, i'd have steve do it. He's has done a countless number of ecu's and has worked miracles. I have heard/seen nothing but good come from his work. He even repaired my ecu when the alternator fried it...but that was back in the day when i was only fwd. Here are his prices... http://simon.chi.il.us/ECU/

i saw the ecu and one of the capacitors was really bad where you could see the sludge all around it. It didn't look like the board was trash, but i'm no expert like you.
