Hi all,
My '93 AWD (5 speed) has been having on/off problems for a couple years but lately, they have gotten worse (cutting out, low power, throwing code 44., etc.). Most of the time, it runs great but then it goes through these spells where it drives me nuts.
This evening, I start it up and pull it into the garage and decide to check my ECU (I recently picked one up for next to nothing on Craigslist). I am the original owner of this car so I know the ECU has never been removed or even looked at.
It came out easily (removing the plugs in the rear was a PIA) and as I suspected, the caps had leaked all over the board - really bad compared to pics I've seen online.
Just as a test, I swapped in the 'new' ECU I just picked up - according to my research, it is one that will work in my car. I had opened up this one too and it's caps were leaking but nearly as bad as my original was.
The car wouldn't start - it just cranks and cranks. I wasn't too surprised.
I swapped my original one back in and the car still would not start - just cranking. I unplugged and replugged the plugs in the back a few times but the car now just cranks. Thinking that I might try 'resetting' the ECU, I disconnected the battery for a minute, then reconnected it. Still no fire - just cranking.
Any ideas? When I opened it, I didn't even touch anything. The wires on the plugs do not look corroded and each time, I firmly plugged them in until they 'snapped' in.
Did opening the ECU let out the DSM magic dust that was keeping it running all this time? :)
Any help or advice would be appreciated and if you know where I can get a good ECU for a 1g 5 speed, please email me at [email protected].
Thanks in advance!
Aaron
PS: my original ECU is EPROM. Will I needd an EPROM ECU as a replacement or will a non-EPROM work as well? Thanks again!

Did you disconnect the battery when removing/plugging in the ecu? You need to, otherwise you run the risk of frying them, which it sounds like you may have done. Either can be repaired, but it sounds like either you fried them, or both the drivers have finally crapped out from leaking.

UPDATE - when I was doing all this last night, it was by droplight. This morning (much brighter) I took another look and noticed that one wire on the smallest plug in the back of the ECU seemed to be sticking out further than the rest. I pushed it in maybe 1/8" and the then the car started right up.
Maybe this will be a reminder to anyone who experiences this frustration to make sure that even if you don't pull on the wires and only push/pull on the plug body (like I did), that the wires can still move around and cause major issues.
Thanks to those that offered suggestions.
Now, I need to find a good ECU since mine is obviously living (and has been for awhile) on borrowed time.
