a bead roller what a waste of money.


get a large crescent wrench and clamp it down on the last 1/8" of the pipe. bend down to make a small lip that goes out.
make about 8 of those evenly spaced around the edge of the pipe. this method was how i stopped all my homemade i/c piping from popping off.

I installed my intercooler for much less than that. All I did was go to www.dejontool.com and order pipes that were prebent and prewelded. The pipes also came with couplers. I ordered the j-pipe for the 16g, an s-bend, a lower downflow intercooler pipe, and a 90* elbow. I also reused my aftermarket UICP for my top intercooler pipes. This all costed $200+shipping for the pipes and $300+shipping for the intercooler. As for mounting the intercooler I had JR make tabs in the intercooler to mount to my bumper. It was actually a lot easier to install and do piping myself than I thought.

Did you figure in the cost of the aftermarket UICP that you reused in that $200 figure?? If you did that is a good price total ($500) It is just that some people like to have all their piping match and stay nice (powdercoating). Good job either way.

And about the bead roller comment by greyforestgst.... Come on man, that is just plain ghetto, at least the welder idea makes since, you aren't altering the edges of your piping, it just isn't as good as the bead roll for a total seal.

No I didn't figure in my upgraded upper intercooler pipe. Thats only because I bought that one year ago. But if you want to figure that in also, at the time it was $75 from dejontool. It is now $105. So for $575 its a pretty nice setup. You also said people like to have their piping stay nice? All my pipes are powdercoated in almost chrome. It really wasn't that hard to do...I've never done anything like this before and I didn't even have to measure anything. All the pipes came beaded and never pop off even with 25psi spike of boost, settling to 21.

As for performance of the intercooler: I ran a 12.6@108 vs. a 12.8@105 with my stock intercooler. I think I could have ran a 12.3 with better tires because I was spinning all through first gear and the best 60' I could cut was a 1.88. When I know my car with traction can cut 1.6-1.7's. I will post pictures of my setup as soon as I can get around to developing pictures.

if you have a welder and skill good for you, but most of us dont and most of us dont want our cars sitting down for 2 weeks while we get bends, measure, get things welded, have shit powdercoated, etc... whats wrong with buying something that goes right on??? if we have so many poineers on this board then why dont you all buy some fence post and build your own cars from scratch? why not start with kia's and build off that platform? why do all of you broke bastards start with a turbocharged 2.0 16 valve car??? and dont say cuz its efficient and easy to make power off of, because you could buy fence post and build your own car that would weigh less then the tanks we drive and be mroe reliable.

anyone ever realize that the fastest cars in the game have expensive parts on them??? its one thing to make something or home engineer something and i'm always very impressed by that and thats cool and all but do not ever knock on someone for buying something pre-made. our skill levels vary from person to person and so do our finances. some us want to spend within a certain budget and some of us dont care, no one on here should judge about what anyone else spends.

Wait this is coming from the same person who wrote this: my name is gsxstac but i got booted off dsmtalk so i post under her name. that is my 2nd spearco custom setup i have done. i know the guy who sells them on ebay so now i just purchase them out of ebay. i'm gonna tel you a secret that no one i know has realized. i dont know if you've heard of victoryperformance.com or not but they make a 2g intercooler kit thats is really nice. but its 1200$!!!! i'm 19 years old and i couldnt afford that so i took a chance. i bought just the full piping kit from victoryperformance.com for 375$ and i bought an intercooler off ebay. i specified how i wanted my endtanks on the intercooler and i specified what dimensions exactly. i never really knew if it was gonna work or not until i actually got the piping and the fmic and put it on. so when i went to do it it fit perfectly, just like that piping as made for that intercooler. so now i'll tell you exactly what tp do.

1. get an intercooler that is 32, 31.5 or 33 inches long (doesnt matter if its 6" tall, 8" tall, 10" tall, or 12" tall.
2.when you order it make sure you specify you want the inlet and outlet to be in the middle of each endtank, not top or bottom. 3.and lastly make sure you tell the guy that you need the alumnium brackets included with it. he includes them for free but only if you ask for them. you have to have the alum brackets welded on. you get 2 of them and both time i did this kit i only used one. you have the one welded on top facin the back of the cooler and then u drill a hole through it. then you get a piece of angle ( metal strip with holes in it found at home depot, loews, etc...) and you rig it up.

my first intercooler was 32x8x3 and it fit nice. i paid 440 for it brand new out of ebay from that guy. my boy wanted it so i sold it to him for 320. my present on is 32x12x3. so only diff is this one is 4" taller. i recommend gettin the 8" tall one or even the 10" at most cuz thast all thats needed. i'm sure with a 10" tall one you could run low 11's. FUNNY THING IS THE ONLY REASON I DID THIS WHOLE PROJECT WAS CUZ I HATED NOT BEIN ABLE TO USE MY BUMPER BRACE. ALL U HAVE TO DO IS BARELY TRIM LIKE 1 INCH FROM THE BACK OF IT AND THE INTERCOOLER GOES RIGHT BEHIND IT.

i'm usin the stock 2g mass air but i have a custom cold air setup that costed me like 30$ and the filter sits right in the fender. i'll show you a pic sometime. good luck


I realize that you were trying to help me out at the time but don't be calling me a cheap bastard if I want to make a custom intercooler setup. I didn't do any measuring, I got pipes that came prebent for a similar setup. It took little thinking and I waited a whole 2 days from when I ordered the pipes to receive them. And yes with I saved a lot of money over a similar setup but look at my other choices: Greddy, tube and fin core with a pipe that goes along the front of the core that blocks around 1/3 of it. Apexi: Has one of the smallest intercoolers I've seen with a kit. Victory Performance: seems complete yet costs $1200. There are many other kits that are out there that have similar negative effects. Not saying they are all bad...But I chose the intercooler that I thought was the best for my setup. Capable of running 11's with it, I'm able to keep my bumper support and stock fans, and my car doesn't overheat. And no I did not rig anything I've had many people already ask what intercooler kit I bought...In other words it looks very professional and it performs well to boot.

dont compare vp's kit at 1200$ with the kit in question costing 675$ if i could have bought my kit for 850$ AND AGAIN, I'M NOT HATING ON ANYONE FOR MAKING CUSTOM PARTS, BUT DONT HATE ON PEOPLE WHO SPEND MONEY TO DO IT RIGHT. I may have not spent the 1250$ for the intercooler but I spent the money on the pre bent piping and bought a brand new intercooler. what I did was an obviously easy way to save 400$ and it was barely any more work, but i dont talk shit to people who buy vp's kit, thats cool too, if anything i envy them because they bought what I copied. whats you and other people here are doing is talking shit to people who spend money on stuff.

Yeah its the stocker , but its worthless to get it polished like that because you can barely see the stock intercooler anyway, but its your money.

I doubt its brand new, polishing jobs are pretty easy, that one looks like some work went into it though. If your fins are just bent you can always carefully bend them back, also while you have it out pour some brake cleaner/alchohol(sp?)/ or gas into the inlets and skake it up and pour out all that de-airflowing crap(come out real dirty, keep doing it till it comes out clean) Also if you use gas make sure you let it dry for a good while.

So are you just going to keep buying new intercoolers when you bend fins and they get dirty inside? Im not saying you have to do this but it could save you thirty bucks (at least), and its easy to do. Your going to run out of money quick with a dsm if you just replace stuff when it could be easily repaired.
