My car just failed emissions and I have very little money to put into it (it also needs some other parts). Anyway, I was wondering if these high flow cats on ebay are descent for $50, I believe they are Magnaflow. I might upgrade to a catback so I can try to save money and not do these areas twice. All input / opinions on these cats are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The car is a 93 TSI all stock minus the K&N. I apologize for not knowing exactly why the car failed but I believe it was something with the nocks? Anyway, I guess many people haven't gone the ebay cat route. It is a magnaflow converter if that matters at all.

nox (nitrates of oxygen) is created when combustion temps exceeds 2500F, occurs when engine is under load and not idle, a slightly lean mixutre will cause the most noxover rich, nox increase with combustion efficiency. can be caused by: engine overheating, EGR system malfunction, lean fuel mixture, carbon deposits in combustion chamber (raises compression ratio and prevents proper heat transfer), timing could be advanced too faror timing not advanced enough, EGR position sensor is faulty, and yes a faulty cat converter...just some info about nox i learned about again for the millionth time at school

Yeah those catco ones are cheap too. Anyone have info on them? If not, where's a cheap place I can get a replacement high-flow cat from? Thanks.

i got one of those knock off cats (magnaflow --- carsound) off ebay, so far so good - - - 1 of those 3" openings . . . worked fine for me, the only problem i encountered was that the outer rim of the cat was measured at 3", so the inside measures a little less than 3", but a good exhaust shop can open the end of it a bit to fit nicely onto your 3 inch turbo back - - - mine works fine, ill keep u updated about the smog check ;) . . . :dsm:

First if you haven't already done this you should change your oil, run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through, check air filter, sparck plugs, egr valve, and replace if necessacary.
There are real cats on ebay. I got a 3" magnaflow, but there are many resonators and straight pipes advertised as cats so just make sure you know what your getting.
Chances are a good tuneup will take care of your problems though.

dude if i was you, just look in your local yellow pages for muffler shops and ask if they have high flow cats. It usually cost less than $100 bucks installed and flow as good as magnaflows/carsound plus you will pass smog without the wait of the ebay cat.

the cats on ebay usually need welding anyways and are not boltons.

What about these though? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7920140268&category=33629

I assume that these are real catco convertors. The price is extremely cheap on these which is why Im asking.

I bought that similar to that for my car after i failed emissions and it cut my CEL off and passed emissions. :thumb:. worked great for me.

Here is the exact one i bought. I love these people. They have great products and 100% customer service.

Those are the ones that I was originally looking at. Thanks for posting. By the way, how was the install?

I took it to a shop to get it done. Didn't take long at all and passed inspection that same day. And i can say i hardly felt a loss of power with the new cat as opposed to the straight pipe i had on there.

Alright, thanks everyone for the help. I think I'll give it a whirl and I'll post up when I get it. If it doesn't work, atleast it's only $40.
