I drive a 98 AWD Talon and I recently just put on Apexi N1 downpipe and catback with an open wastegate dump. Is it just me or does it sound nasty when your half throttle like a bad exhaust leak. I dont even want to accelerate next to a car cause it sounds gross. Any way my dumb idea is to stick an ebay turbo whistler in the dump. It might muffle some of the raspy sound and might sound cool. Comment and Criticism please.

Just go get some long tubing like this. The shorter the pipe, the louder the sound. So of course the longer piping will quiet it down some.

why would put one of those whistle turbo things on your wg dump! if you dont like it get it custom fab'd into the o2 housing or get the pipe extended becouse that will make it a little bit more quiet.

That's why I figured a mini muffler - very little restriction as it bypasses the rest of the exhaust but still cut out some of the sound.

You know it might even be that it's just the vibration of that tubing itself. Have you tried wrapping the outside of that pipe to see if it cuts out on some of the sound?

I was talking more about the turbo noise maker. I also thing I beat you to proposing the muffler; check post # 11. :thumb:

Motorcycle muffler is an OLD idea, geez I bought one for my external about 5 years ago.
Muffler ain't gonna last too long that close to the motor. Packing is gonna degrade quickly and just get louder anyway.

If you read my post, then you would have noticed I mentioned putting the muffler in the rear of the car, and piping going all the way to my WG.

the more you try to quite dowwn the dump it will be restricting your dump. that will cause boost creep. the whole point of it is to stop boost creep. you should extend on to it and run it through the front bumper or twords the back of the car

I got a internal dump dp from dejon.
The piping is the same size as a civic's. I bet that you can fit their stock muffler.:D Coming out from the side.

That doesn't make much sense. The ambient temp is MUCH less than the gas going through it. Run your car hard for like an hour and see if the muffler isn't burning up. Surely it can hold up.

I don't think that it's possible for a DSM to be driven hard for like an hour.:D:D

I think this is really simple bro ether you take it to a mufler shop and ask them to cut a whole on the side, and recirculate the dump tube and quite down the car completely or get used to it!!!.;)

Plus the wastegate pushes out alot more rushing exhaust than the tail pipe.
Not true. Typically, the wastegate flows much less than 25% of the total engine's exhaust output. But the pressure is higher at the wastegate than the tailpipe, so that higher pressure simply gives the perception of higher volume.

See post #23.

Moparbishi - Those eBay whistles are good for one thing - feeding ignorance. They don't muffle sound. Three minutes after installation, you will realize that you just wasted twenty bucks. An hour after that, the screw will loosen, back out, and that whistle will fall off while you're driving. And you will be left with nothing but a memory and a lighter wallet.

Don't reinvent the wheel. Sell that dumped 02 housing and buy a recirculating housing. It really is that simple.
