Dumb wastgate dump idea

I drive a 98 AWD Talon and I recently just put on Apexi N1 downpipe and catback with an open wastegate dump. Is it just me or does it sound nasty when your half throttle like a bad exhaust leak. I dont even want to accelerate next to a car cause it sounds gross. Any way my dumb idea is to stick an ebay turbo whistler in the dump. It might muffle some of the raspy sound and might sound cool. Comment and Criticism please.

That might work.
Where is your dump placed? Is it routed outside the bay or is it just straight off the WG? If it is straight off the WG, routing some tubing will actually cut out some of the tinge.

the dump is part of the ported o2 housind and it points down to the ground and is about 8 inches long

im assuming you have an internal wastegate dump? those tend to sound pretty nasty/crappy. in my opinion you shouldnt dump an internal, but externals are much more controlled, and sound 100% better than an internal dump.

i bought the o2 housing with dump cause i am going to stick with internal wg. I have a 16g lined up for it soon.

Hmmm. I love the way it sounds, but I know what you mean about how it sounds like an exhaust leak when it's partially open on part throttle. I wouldn't do that whistle thing in the exhaust, I do'nt know how that would sound.
I would just go with a tubular recirculated o2 housing that Megan Racing sells for ~$75.

Technically it is an exhaust leak.

I'd love to know how it sounds with the whistler.

thats obvious it sounds like shit. but i figure that if it is going in a dump tube that is only an inch and a half dia. Plus the wastegate pushes out alot more rushing exhaust than the tail pipe. 20 bucks shipped, doesnt hurt

Have you tried looking for something that will just straight muffle it? I don't know if could get your hands on anything like an ATV muffler or possibly a small bike's, but that might even work without causing too much back pressure.

Now there's an idea! It might be a bit big... you could just stick it to the side of the car. If anyone asks, tell them it's a rocket booster.

What if I extended piping from my WG all the way to the rear of the car, and strapped on the exhaust back there?

The description I read on the dump said it is loud rushing air. I like the sound at full throttle but half throttle sounds like ass. It might sound neat or really ### I don't know.

I vote for a little muffler or some steel wool up in the pipe. The ebay whistlers sound awful, and you already have a real turbo that gives you the spool up sound

The whole advantage of an open WG is that there is no volume restriction from the expelling gasses and that there is a constant volume in the turbo's exhaust. Putting a restriction in the WG would negate that advantage. I've always liked recirc more.

That's why I figured a mini muffler - very little restriction as it bypasses the rest of the exhaust but still cut out some of the sound.

You know it might even be that it's just the vibration of that tubing itself. Have you tried wrapping the outside of that pipe to see if it cuts out on some of the sound?
