Hey.. First post here on the DSM forums.

My friend and I recently bought a 91 Talon that is completely ready to rally. Only thing is we can't drive our first race with the turbo on the car. All my research on the topic leads me to believe that its not worth the effort to convert the car to NA for the first race. I figured I would still see what you guys thought about it.

Here are some details about the car:

Rally America Group 5, NASA open 2wd
2.0 4g63 Turbo Engine
Stock 5spd assembled correctly with plastic gauge
Kaaz limited slip
16G Turbo built by Turbo Techniques, only a few events on turbo
Stock intercooler and piping
650 RC injectors
255 Walboro fuel pump
Apexi SAFC tuning device
Runs fine on pump gas

Big Awd Mitsubishi brake conversion
Porterfield brake pads
steel braided brake hoses
DMS 50mm Gravel Suspension
Adjustable limit straps
Reinforced/gusseted suspension parts

Thanks

Can you run it for the other races?

Stock 1g turbo pistons are only 7.8: CR, aka, they're a complete dog out of boost. You can do whatever you want, but a turbo motor without a turbo will be slower than a non turbo car.

You could disconnect the wastegate flapper from the wastegate actuator arm; therefore, the wastegate will be open the whole time under any sort of boost pressure and will essentially drive like a dog. Or, if your wastegate actuator is adjustable, you can have the wastegate flapper open, then just shorten the rod so that it is fully functional/closed.

There are alot of ways you can make your turbo car not boost. Why the heck do you NEED to race the first event N/A?? I don't see the point. If you are worried about crashing, then you are in the wrong sport. It is like telling a guy on a crotch rocket that he cannot go fast because he is going to likely crash sometime in his life. Just go do it, and enjoy it. You have to learn how to drive the car in a rally condition anyways.

IF they won't let you run turbo because stupid seat time rules (the group I was looking to run you have to have 1 year of 2wd seat time before you can run AWD so I told them to go #### off I was driving my TSi or going home) then just unhook the waste gate flapper and tell them the turbo is disconnected and will not create any boost.

Classes are not stupid. Would it be fair if non-turbo i4's were racing turboed v6's? No. The seat time sounds stupid and ass backwards. It would make more sense to let you drive in a car less likely to lose control (4wd) than a FWD or RWD. Anyway...it will be a dog. Non-turbos have different cams/timing, and are 9:1 compression, and have shorter gearing. The only way to keep up is if all the drivers were retards and you are a WRC rally driver.

Its the rules for rally america... You need seat time in Group 1 (FWD Non-Turbo). Unless both driver and co driver have taken rally school.. which costs around 2000-2500 a person. It would be a lot cheaper to race for a year in FWD and learn by driving. They don't want just any asshole driving a 300 hp awd car through the woods.

We are trying to find out if opening the waste gate would be acceptable...

Now, if that does work.. Would there be a better map for the car to be running?

You profile says 91 non-turbo with turbo. So was it a whole swap or just a turbo slap-on? If it was a turbo slap on it would be better. But opening the wastegate there will still be a slight boost from the turbo. I don't think they'll go for it. I never understood why they don't have a single-person-per-car rally class for those who know the course already... I will NEVER try rally because of that. I don't want someone shouting at me for direction. That and I wouldn't want to destroy my car.

I say your best bet is to get a cheap stock non turbo motor in a salvage yard use it til you get in the next class.

your profile says your car is a n/t with a turbo, Is it using the non turbo motor with a turbo on it? or did they swap a whole 4g63t into it? if its the true non-turbo motor with just a motor slapped on it, then yea...run it without the turbo and re-tune it.

i personally would feel bad messing up the tune just to run without a turbo. On the other hand, i would probably run my 86 supra i bought for 300 dollars until i had the "seat time" to run the gsx,,,

ramsack beat me to it...LOL

for the OP, i know at a pull-a-part here in georgia 4 cylinder motors run at 75 dollars.

from pick n pull around here you can get them for 200. i have seen them on craigslist for upto 500. but would deff be alot better than runnin a turbo motor without the turbo.

You can just;

Disconnect turbo, manifold, plug oil feed, plug oil return, loop coolant lines if any, put on a stock 4g63 n/t manifold, then run a cold air intake, just put your MAF in between the TB and Air filter.

That is about a couple hours worth of work, but it'll be nicer and more reliable during that year.

Lastly, you might have to fabricate the rest of the exhaust between the manifold and turbo downpipe, but still....Not that hard

Or run open header or side exit :hellyeah:
