what should i look for.....test drove a tsi like half an hour ago....161k.....started right up...idle pretty normal....engine sounded very smooth....it is an auto.....what else should i be looking for? they want $2100 for it. is this to much? help...need a winter car to keep the mile off my evo:sosad:
oil on the top of the valve cover as well but i didnt see any oil on the ground

I would check out the vehicle history, I have found some interesting stuff on those reports. Try to drive it for as long as you can, pay attention to drivetrain sound, ease of shifting and overall ride. I always like to hear the motor run right up close to listen for anything out of the ordinary. Other than actually inspecting it top bottom, that is what i look for.

thanks man....its and auto....seemed to shift pretty good.....steering was a little wobbally....but it needs an alignment....our dsm pretty reliably? ive heard they are not.....it is stock by the way

Stock is a good thing in my opinion, you don't worry so much about someone with out the know how improperly modifying the car. As far as the reliability i believe it all depends on how well you maintain the car(Oil & fluid changes, regular inspections of belts hoses etc.). My car has been pretty good to me but it only has 82,000 Miles on it. There might be some gaskets, hoses and such that would need replaced on a car with 161,000 miles on it, but if your willing to do it or have it done then that car could be a bargain depending on the final price.

thanks agian....outside is pretty good, considering age....i didnt see ne rust. in side is pretty rough....i didnt even see seat belts, the the things the seatbelts go into where there but no belt itself....

oil on the valve cover is notorious with these cars before first taken into a dsm tuners hands.

would you say yours has been a pretty good car? thanks btw guys :thumb:

what causes the oil to be on the cover?

Most likely your valve cover gasket needs replacing...not too hard of a fix really, basically just pull the valve cover, clean the surfaces, and slap a new gasket on...Just make sure when you reinstall the valve cover that you properly torque the bolts that hold it in place...The whole process can be done in about an hour (if its your first time replacing one)

basically. Just remember to change the gaskets for the spark plug holes too because those go bad too. Btw these valve covers crack fairly easily so don't kong torque 'em:thumb:

To me $2100 seams a little high for a 93 auto with 161.xxx
But if It runs really good. With no problems. Con him down a few hundred and go for it.

The whole seat belt things sounds a little iffy, that is a good point to bring up when working for a lower price, just complain about that being something you will end up spending money on just to legally drive the car.

thanks guys....coming from an evolutionm.net....this forum rocks:rocks:....big help thanks again!
im also looking in the for sale on here too:talon:
