Sorry so long:

Hey, I just bought a 1993 Talon TSI (FWD) 5-speed and was looking to get a little more information about it. I will be picking it up this week. Anyway, I'm new to DSM's but not new to modding cars as I have a 91 Mustang 5.0 that is halfway modded with about 375hp but it's not a daily driver. I'm just looking for some background info on my car. I have read the FAQ's and the Tuning Guide's, and I don't plan on making any mods yet until I find out that everything is mechanically sound with the car. Anything I should watch out for with these? Also, where do you guys shift your stock cars? I am new to the manual transmission so it should be a lot of fun. And I see a lot of acronyms being used, some forums have a page just for these, and chance of this one having that? If not, can someone make a brief list of some of the common ones used here? I appreciate all the help, and go easy on the fact that I have a 5.0! Thanks.

Almost forgot, the car has 130k on it, appears to be in very good shape and I paid only $1600 for it.

These cars can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It just depends on if you beat the hell out of it every day. About shifting, I usually shift about 5900-6200 through gears. These trannies are notorious for being junk so you might wanna watch for that. Also, something your not gonna like a whole lot but your car is a 7 bolt and these motors are notorious for crankwalk. Do yourself a favor and swap in a 6 bolt motor.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely don't plan on taking the motor out anytime soon but if it gets pulled I'll be sure to replace it with a 6 bolt. You said you shift between 5900 and 6200, so max hp would be about 6000? Also, do you know which rear this model comes with? I'd look but as I said I don't have it yet. Thanks.

Comes with a 3 bolt rear. People usually replace a 3 bolt rear with a 4 bolt. Im not sure when the powerband is at it's peak with stock cams but around 6k is when I would shift unless you get 272 cams then you can go all the way to rev limiter (about 7200) and still have power.

I appreciate the quick responses guys, and I printed that acronym list. Only there's debate over which rear is in it. It's no big deal though I'll just check myself when I get it. I can't wait to give it a full detail!

Show me a post where it says 4 bolt? 90 and some 91's have 4 bolt rears
#1: he bought a '93 Talon. His Mustang is a '91.

#2: he's FWD, there's not going to be a rear diff. :D

LOL o damn! Didnt even catch that!
LMFAO, me either, till just a minute ago!

XHAUST: to clear things up:
90 & 91 have a 3-bolt rear/6-bolt engine
All 92's have a 4-bolt rear, most have 6-bolt engines, some have 7-bolt
93+ have 4-bolt/7-bolt.

This only applies to AWD cars - the FWD cars don't have a rear differential, only a front differential inside the transmission that runs the axles directly.

WOW, sorry about even bringing up the rear in the car, not used to FWD!!! Thanks for the info guys.

Yes, yes it will. But I still would bet ya his year of an awd is 3 bolt :p .
You might want to brush up on your knowledge of what-year-has-what. 89 through early 92 1/2's have 3 bolt rears, late 92 1/2's and up have 4 bolt. If you are not sure on something, look it up before answering other people's questions.

My early 1992 has a 4-bolt

Anyway congrats on the purchase :thumb:

My bad. I just did a search on it and 90-91 have 3 bolts and 92-94 have 4 bolts. Mine has a 4 bolt so I imagine it was swapped out. Next time I will do a search before I post :thumb: .
