DSM Generation Poll [Please Help]

You might of seen me before when I made a thread saying that a DSM is one of my choices for a first car. I think I want a DSM but which generation is better for a starter car? am going to be modding a little bit too. Feel free to explain why.

Hold off on the DSM until you get settled as a driver.
I'll make the assumption that since you're young and this is your first car that A) you don't have the funds for the repairs that will be required and ,B) you don't have a back up car.

Either 1G or 2G is a good choice if looking for a project car but a bad choice for primary transportation.

^^ I agree, get a beater for your first car, learn the basic mechanical things on your car, then when you have some road time and mechanical experience under your belt go ahead and get a dsm. Just remeber it will probably kick your ass, both my dsms have but let me tell you , you learn a whole lot about cars when you have one. And always keep some extra cash handy and that beater you bought for a first car, it comes in handy.

The only reason I have ever seen for putting up with a DSM is the Turbo/5 speed/AWD package. A N/T car has 99% of the flakiness and none of the fun.

I would get the 2nd gen, the reliablitly of the car all rests on how many miles are on the car,what mods you put into it,and if you are gonna beat on it on a daily basis. I had my 2nd gen for a year and i did minimal mods like exhaust,intake,1g bov etc..That thing ran perfect for that year..stepped it up to a big 16g and was running that setup for 6 months car ran beautiful and reliable, nothing broke or needed replacing. After those 6 months i stepped it up yet again to a Full Garret 60-1 setup..Well lets just say at that point reliablilty took a seat :laugh:

It runs and puts down insane power but i totally messed up my trans..needed to replace the radiator, blew a intake gasket, etc

I dont necessarily agree with everyone sayin you shouldnt get a dsm for your first car..hell if u want a badass dsm do it, find something with low miles and you can do some mods and you will be fine.. Well if your on a budget go with the 1g being how there cheaper but they are very old cars and will probably need lots of maintence unless you can find some out there with low miles.

I voted for 1Gen even though i just bought a second gen. The reason why i did that is because i think 1gens are hot and they are a lot cheaper. Hard to find one in good condition but in my opinion they are easier to mod. It has to be 5 speed thouth. Good luck.

I love the way 2G's look, but I also love the way 1G's look too I think the 2G could get you more chicks, they look sleek and refined, but the 1G's look more business to me.

I think a DSM could make a good first car, just say hell with it and buy one . My DSM is my primary transportation, my second car I owned. I really don't have much trouble with her after the purchase, fact might be too that I rebuilt the motor after buying I just have to plan out when installing things so that I can get them done on a weekend so I can drive it the next week, or have a friend ready with a ride so I can let the DSM sit until i can finish work. I dont really see why the reputation is that they break constantly, although it is fun to have your friends believe your car is always breaking

Only thing I had issues with is idle, which got worked out.
I think these cars are a cinch to work on though..I like working on it a lot better then my old 5.0 Mustang

i got a 1g dsm as my first car and im still driving it today. i never had it break down on me except when my clutch went out from me and my freinds learning how to drive manual with it. but i have a n/t and i dont know the reliability of the turbo model so i say get a 1g dsm.

in my opnion 1gs look like sh!tstompers. totally slick looking, but all i could find in good condition is a 2g I am still looking for that ever elusive unmodified 1g with less than a million miles on it to be my true performance machine. haha. my 2g will then remain my daily and i could have a gnarly 1g for the weekends I think the 1gs look alot more sleeper-esque, and thats something i like.

Anyways to the topic at hand:

I purchased a 2g cuz i liked how it looked. I now wish i had a 1g. Few reasons such as; they are cheaper, easier to find in wrecking yards when you break something you shouldnt have touched and i like the look of them more than 2gs now. Anyways any dsm you can find will be great as long as you dont drive it into the ground (wot at every stoplight/sign you see.. every time) and keep the boost low untill you can support more. Also assuming the person you are getting it from hasnt destroyed it before you get to it haha. Best of luck to you.

I would say get a dsm, cuz that's what I got for my first car. 2g Talon TSi... low LOOWW miles.. but.. I totaled that car It didn't deserve that. So for my second car I got another 2g Talon TSi . I love dsms And mine's my every day transportation.. but my dad and me fix everything that happens.. so I would say get one if you have the money for maintenance.. and you're not gonna make my stupid mistake of totaling it!

Thats most likely because civic si are newer... and worth more... for the most part.

I'd say that DSMs are good cars.. however i agree that a back up beater is needed, especially if you're going to modify it... I always thought 2gs were a little more feminine but 1gs are older, and you'll always have little things breaking... pick up a cheap ass honda or toyota since you don't get too much snow in texas i'm guessing.. otherwise i'd say pick up a cheap old awd subie

I voted for 1g, but then I thought. My 1g is quickly becoming a money pit, and I have only had it for 2 months. If you don't have a source of good income get a stock 2g in excellent mechanical condition and don't touch it.

If you have a high tolerance for pain, and a bank account that needs a diet, then get a 1g and build your mod list. If you go this route get a beater civic companion for your beater 1g. The civic will be more reliable

Having owned both 1 and 2 g cars-I voted 1g for a few reasons.First off,your young and your obviously EXTREMELLY intelligent for having such taste for choosing one of the finest cars known to scare the crap outta honda tuners and make a mustang owner cower in fear Yes the require more maintenance,but concider it a learning experience and who know??You might like cars so much you design the 7th gen...And that they are really good sleeper rigs.They dont know what hit them till there suckin' exaust.A 2nd gen looks like your typical sleek sports car.And there is also a factor of money.Maybe the 2g you buy has a bunch of probs and its alot more to fix than a 1g.Either way you go-know you make a good choice in a DSM-L8's man

i voted no dsm for a first car. even in stock form they arent the most reliable thing to have, and being young youre prolly not making enough money to afford the random shit that breaks. not to mention if you do have the funds to mod, then its only a matter of time before you kill a tranny.

for a first car, get something reliable and slow. slow enough that you know you cant do anything other than drive normal. this will keep you out of trouble and make you a more sane driver. hell all my freinds had mustang gt's and they were crazy ass drivers in hs and even now, i had a 74 mustang with the 2.3 I4 and it was slow as balls, but you dont see me weaving through traffic like a madman.

then when youre older and can afford toys and the things that comes with them(general maintenance and a "if shit happens" fund) then come aboard to the world of dsm's. it can be a very rewarding place to be, especially when you take a car with so much potential that can be made so much more for super cheap.

I voted for a 1G simply because it's your first car and it will get tore up and abused. The 1G's cost must less than the 2G's for the most part. Dont spend alot for your first car.

Don't let "reliablity" get the better of "care". You should buy the car you like and find one in that year/make/model that you can get checked over. I can show you 10 2G's that look "reliable" but wouldn't make it to the stop sign. I can also show you 10 1G's that look less than desireable but will get you were you want to go as long as you need it too.

There is a guy that lives 2 streets down. 93 tsi awd that has 170,xxx miles on the original EVERYTHING in the car. Never skips a beat.



As for modding these cars. Stay out of it till you feel comfortable doing it yourself or have a buddy that is pretty good at it. Saves you ALOT of money on labor and also gives you a sense of security with the "care" and "reliability" you are getting out of the car.

I dont see a problem with getting one for a first car because you will learn very quickly how to fix a car and that will save you money in the long run. I mean seriously think about it. My ex-girlfriend had her mom take her grand am to the dealership for new front brakes and it ended up costing $850 dollars for front brakes!!!! I have always been good at wrenching on a car and when my tranny shelled at the track I got a crash course it tearing down a DSM in a weekend.

Oh and by the way I have a 90 TSI AWD and a 98 Cobra Mustang and Im going to sell the mustang and just drive the talon because the mustang is too damned reliable. I mean atleast with the DSM I was always busy with it. So with that car payment out of the way and going towards the talon its going to be a beast.
