Hey fellow DSM owners, I am Dan H. one of the employees over at Modern Automotive Performance. I personally own a 1990 Dark Cherry TSI, and recently was doing a little work on it. I was pointed towards a set of the Drop Engineering 4 piece motor mounts to try out, and since my OEM mounts were feeling a little too soft, I figured why not! They are OE drop in mounts, and this is all my personal experience with them! Also included a link for you guys interested in what the kit entails.
Drop Engineering Motor Mount Kit (1G DSM) - Modern Automotive Performance
Install:
Installation of the mounts was relatively easy. With a buddy and a lift, we managed to install them all with the engine and transmission still in the car, in around 2 hours. Most of that time was spent fiddling with the back mount, as that one was the most difficult to reach, and we decided to put that one in last. We also had all the mounts already tightened down, and I can say just from trying to install the last one, they are pretty stiff! Here is a pic of a stock trans side mount, next to the Drop Engineering replacement.
As you can see, the finish is great. I wasn't super stoked on the green, but I believe other color inserts are available! The welds all looked sturdy and well done. Definitely didn't have me worried one bit, when it came to putting them in my own car. The fitment was fantastic, no problems installing, just like installing my stock mounts back in my car.
Feel:
Unfortunately I have not had a good amount of seat time to try these babies out, as my car is having some fuel gremlins. But from the brief time in the car, the mounts feel good. With my cams, idle is a little bit shakey, but nothing I wouldn't feel with poly mounts. What I did love, was how solid my shifting felt. A couple of my mounts were a little warn, and with a notchy second gear already, my transmission just did not like second sometimes (all on the list of things to replace this winter HAHA). When I took it out for the first cruise, my shifts felt so much more solid, and there wasn't as much movement as with my old OE mounts. My car has pretty low miles, and the OE mounts were in decent shape, but the feel of the new mounts is leaps and bounds above what they were before! Can not wait to get more time to enjoy them.
Main Engine Mount (Replaces big "L" bracket mount)
Transmission Side mount
Front Engine Mount
Rear Engine Mount

Conclusion:
So far, I haven't found one thing I didn't like about the mounts (besides the green, but meh). Easy to install, great looking pieces, and so far have felt great to drive with! I can't wait for a winter restoration, and make some power to further test these bad boys. Feel free to ask questions, I can try my best to answer them!
Big thanks Drop Engineering for a great mount set at a good price, and also a big thanks to Mr. Nate Evans over here at MAP for pointing me towards these mounts!
