so i just got back from the title place to get my car registerd and plated and they told me to notorize my title i have to have the dealer wich is knowhere to be found unless i pay 380 dollars in late taxes for him and myself. im moving to nebraska and up there all i need is this title and my proof of insurance... and its waaaaaaaayy cheaper.

so im going to drive up there i have my proof of insurance, title, bill of sale, but no plates, registration or tags. and the car was purchased on 7/11/09 but it took me this long to get the car fixed and running right...

think ill be ok?.... whats the worst that can happen if i get pulled over?... just a ticket?... or worse?

As this was said before, contact your DMV for a temporary transport tag, this will give you usually 7 days to transport the vehicle. and they are cheap too. I think they are 5 dollars a day in Pennsylvania. 35 bucks well spent if you ask me.

i guess if it was wrote up there i missed it dammit thats the best answer ive got so far! i will definatly look into that.. but will my title need to be notorized? will i have to pay all those same fees just to get the temp transport tag? cause then it would be pointless and i would be better off just registering it here

When you get pulled over they will be towing your car and giving out no reg and no plate tickets. They cannot just let you continue on after doing this.
If I were you I'd listen to these guys telling you to throw on some random plates preferably your own, or from someone in your immediate family to make your story easier to explain and more believable.

If the drive is mostly highway and you watch your speed you shouldn't have an issue with cops along the way.

Try to make the trip at night and you'll be even safer.

PS- If the local DMV isn't letting you register the car locally without the title being notorized, I doubt they will give you temp tags to drive it out of state.. This would be the cheapest legal way and worth a try but I don't think it'll happen.

Is the title printed with your name on it? Or, does it have someone elses name printed on it, but signed over to you? It doesn't matter what nebraska title law is, if the state who the title is issued in requires a notary to witness the signing off of the previous owner, it needs to be notarized in the presence of the previous owner. If the title is already printed in your name then just get a temp tag. A car with no plate will be impounded on an interstate highway. They will be being "cool" about it if they don't rip it apart thinking you are smuggling something.

the title has the original owners name printed on it. and sighned over to my name... but not notorized... but i dont need the seller there to witness the notory i just need to witnesssess there over the age of 18.... atleast thats what they told me at the place here where you get registration and title. so they wont give me a temporary transport tag?

I kid you not, I do this at least twice a year, and cross-country at that. Back in March when I bought this car I got pulled over once on it's 700 mile maiden voyage. I might add, that was the first time I'd ever been pulled over without plates after doing this for literally years. The guy asked to see the title, I let him look at it, and he let me go on my merry way - no ticket, no problems. Of course, your mileage may vary.

dsmTripp, please keep in mind things are different in the country than they are up for you city folk. He's in Louisiana, not the People's Republic of New York. You may very well get your car towed up in New York, but I've never heard of such a thing in my entire life here.

half the people say ill get towed and the other half say ill be fine...... i really dont know what to do but putting a false plate on it is not an option..... ive gotten in trouble for doing that plenty of times before and its pretty much the reason ive lost my liscense once... putting facticiouse plates on my car WILL NOT give me a better excuse to talk my way out of it.... if i get pulled over with somebody elses plates no matter who they belong to the car will get towed.... ive been through that to many times to know

My dad was a police officer. He said if it was him (He was also known for letting people off most of the time) he would defiantly pull you over and if you were using fake plates you WOULD go to jail, get a ticket, and have your car impounded. If you aren't using any plates some states WOULD give you a ticket because of how they run their law enforcement. In Illinois odds are if you are leaving the state then you ARE getting a ticket.

People can lie to you all they want and tell you they do this all the time and all other kinds of BS, but its just that.

Don't do it. Pay the registration get over it. Its better than having points on your drivers license and paying the towing cost. Some states this would be points on it some states not.

IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK! DO NOT DO IT!

you ^^ are exactly the person i need to talk to but i dont think you clarified this, im NOT gonna put plates on my car... im just driving it bare with no plates, registration or tags... im fine with getting a ticket and a couple points off my liscense, i just dont want to get towed.... getting towed is all im worried about... can you ask your dad will i get towed when i get pulled over?.... not using fake plates just no plates at all... im driving to nebraska to register it there and ive just purchased the vehicle recently and i have proof of insurance, valid liscense, title and bill of sale

How are you moving the rest of your stuff? If you're using a uhual, can't you just get a trailer and tow it behind it?

You know how many cops your going to see in just 500 miles? Let alone, 1100. Every cop can pull you over, give you a ticket, or even tow you. You would be much better off driving the speed limit, using your blinker at all times, and using whatever plates. Have all documents and explain the situation IF you get pulled over. I've driven to Philly many many many times (500 miles from where I live) and have only got pulled over once.... for speeding. Just don't drive like a moron, but your asking for it if you drive with no plates. Guaranteed.

Just don't do it :nono:... Just check with your DMV and see what it takes to get the Transport Tags, even with a notary it will cost much less than full registration. You WILL get pulled over for anything suspicious. And even getting a ticket out of state can cost you a ton! That's not to mention what happens if your car gets towed or worse you get arrested. Don't be concerned with what probably will or won't happen here. Just play it safe and if you can't get a temp tag through a dealer or a DMV then have it transported on truck or like mentioned earlier tow it behind the u-haul if you're using one. Hell, rent a ranger and a towing setup. Anything other than risking the wrath of Murphey's Law! GL with the move however you do it! :thumb: And be sure to let us all know how it all went!

Shawn if you have any documentaion of where you are moving to bring it with you also I recomend you put a pice of paper in the back window that says "in transit to Nebraska". As a fromer STPSO Deputy, DO NOT use swaped tags!!! = srait to jail do not pass go. Suit cases in the back will help your story. You will get pulled over dont be too nervous about it and be prepared to get searched!

There is no point in puting La tags on it when you are moving out of state. Just currious what state is your divers lisence in? You should be fine any way but was currious.

You still want me to look at the car tomorrow?

Edit: I dont know of any notary that will give a temp tag. But you might want to ask about travel between states. No dealer around here is going to risk their insurance or lisence to give you a temp tag. Do you have a bill of sale? I would recomend this but I noticed you said you can not find the guy you bought it from. Also your probaly going to need insurance on the car it will make life easier. See if you can get a nebraska policy and get a copy faxed to you or a local agent.

Edit2: I dont recomend driving with out a tag just so you all know. It is at each officers descrestion as to wither to let you go, ticket, impund, or even jail you. His choice will depend on how you act and what kid of mood he/she is in from the previous person they pulled over and other factors like if you were doing some thing else illegal.

Then you should have got his name and badge number and filed a harassment suit against him. I dare these lame ass cops to pull me over when I didn't do anything wrong, there will be hell to pay along with a quick recorded conversation as well. My phone is handy like that :thumb:

Dude if you have no plates it is illegal! And it is called probable cause. Doesn't matter if you are driving like a grandpa or speeding like a maniac you can be pulled over for no tags.

im actually going to get my drivers liscense on tuesday... i am reinstated now but it was suspended for being caught driving with facticiouse plates a bunch of times.... maybe that will help everyone else understand why i WILL NOT drive the car with someone elses plates. and i was planning on calling you to see if we could meet up tuesday night but i got the problem fixed... it was a intake mani gasket leak. i i still wanted to meet up but i dont know if i will now because i cant afford the 400 to get it registered and i really dont know what im gonna do since i only have about 400 dollars to my name and i just quit my job thinking i was leaving in a couple of days.

yes i have insurance on the car... its not full coverage but better than liability. i also have a title with someone elses name printed on it but sighned over to me on the back.... and i just printed up a bill of sale for the seller with two witnessess when i got the car but its not notorized or anything just sighned buy me the seller and two witnessess....

like ive said before... i dont mind a ticket and if numerouse cops pull me over ill show them my first ticket and ill probably not get another one... i just dont want to get towed...

and im not driving a U haul for my stuff i only have two suitcases....

and the money i have i need to register the vehicle in nebraska

I agree it's unreal on what they charge to transfer title / new tag / etc. (almost $400 to make my project car legal) but I wouldn't dare drive it 1100 miles (heck, I get nervous driving it in my neighborhood so I can see how the car drives). Then again, I don't have the greatest luck in the world. I got pulled over leaving the guy I just bought the car from with someone behind me (not even a 1/4 mile away) but the cop let us go with no ticket or anything as I was only 10 miles or so from my house.

Just give DMV a call Monday and see about the temp/transport tags and if that dosn't work then good luck.

You get pulled over with no plates/no registration or you get pulled over with swapped plates/no registration you'll get the same tickets and be towed either way. You will only go to jail for incorrect plates if the plates come up stolen. A 20% chance at best making it there with no plates, 90% chance making it there with plates.

In NYS the laws are real strict as well as the cops. For the first 3 months of owning my car I used the plates off my pickup because I had no title yet. I was pulled over twice for loud exhaust and both times they had it towed and handed me a ticket for loud exhaust, no registration, and swapped plates. The court dropped the loud exhaust and swapped plates charges both times for a guilty plea to no registration. $175 fine, no jail, no license suspension, nothing besides a fine.
