so i just got back from the title place to get my car registerd and plated and they told me to notorize my title i have to have the dealer wich is knowhere to be found unless i pay 380 dollars in late taxes for him and myself. im moving to nebraska and up there all i need is this title and my proof of insurance... and its waaaaaaaayy cheaper.

so im going to drive up there i have my proof of insurance, title, bill of sale, but no plates, registration or tags. and the car was purchased on 7/11/09 but it took me this long to get the car fixed and running right...

think ill be ok?.... whats the worst that can happen if i get pulled over?... just a ticket?... or worse?

I've been pulled over with my Corvette plates on my Blazer (this was before my DSM's). The cop said that he could impound my car, but he let me go with a "False or fictitious registration" ticket. I would try to at least borrow a set that isn't expired to slap on it.

Are you saying you want to drive the car with absolutely NO PLATES on the car? That is a lot more noticeable than driving with plates that aren't actually yours. Cops only pull you over if your doing something wrong. I would honestly put whatever plates on the car and just drive.

Thats what I think to myself. I have been pulled over before and the cop told me his reason was just to make sure I wasnt doing anything illegal because I looked suspicious.

If you have the title, but it isn't your name on it, you will need to get it notorized anywhere you go to get it put in your name. Unless, the state the title is from doesn't require a notary. Cali titles don't need notarized, but az titles do. So if you buy a car titled in arizona in cali you still need to get the title notarized.

Then you should have got his name and badge number and filed a harassment suit against him. I dare these lame ass cops to pull me over when I didn't do anything wrong, there will be hell to pay along with a quick recorded conversation as well. My phone is handy like that :thumb:

yes i am driving the car without plates! and im not going to just put some other plates on it.... in some states thats a felony offence and its the exact reason why i have lost my liscense before!.. so im not gonna do that..

what im asking is, if i get pulled over (wich i probably will) all that can happen is ill get a ticket right?... there not gonna toe my car or take my to jail or tell me i cant drive it right?

the state of nebraska doesnt require a notary

I have been pulled over twice in new cars and I just tell them I bought it recently and I didn't have any problems.

yeah but i bought the car 3 monthes ago and it says that on the title but i will just explain to the cop that i bought it broke down and thats how long it took me to fix it and now im moving to nebraska so im getting it registerd and plated up there..... i think ill be ok

thanks for the advice:cool:

I have been pulled over once after buying a car and driving it and had no problem. But a couple months ago I took my DSM for a trip around the block to test out the new trans and I got popped for no plates but he let me slide with the insurance.

As long as you have the title and bill of sale you will be fine. Just make sure everything is legal and filled out good there. Don't use differnt plates on it, thats just asking for lots of hassel.

Driving with no tags is just asking to get pulled over and towed. No, it's not a felony to use another plate only to steal one probably. Hell, if I was you, I'd take a piece of white cardboard (the size of a plate) and just write "DSM4Life" on it and put it up in your rear window. At first glance it'd look like a plate. It wouldn't be illegal. It would only be illegal if your wrote "47b234" and tried to pass it as a plate :) Just make sure you have insurance on the car, and they'd probably give you a break with no plates.

Edit: Just for clarification. You can only run on a "temp plate" (or any other VALID car plate) for 30 days on a purchased vehicle (in Indiana).

I bought a car in IL and was given temp registration that expired in 7 days, then registered car in FL. Are you sure that you can't talk to the dealer, seems like they should be able to do something for you.

Dude, the problem is that you won't see just one cop in 1100 miles. You will see a lot of them. And unless they have something better to do, they will pull you over, and I bet they could impound your car. Either way you are shafted. Pay the fees and get the plates now (or when you can afford them). If you do take the trip, good luck-hopefully everyone leaves you alone!

We have a used car dealership here in MN, and all we have to do when someone buys a car from out of state is give them a 31-day out-of-state permit, fill out a purchase order, copy the title for our records and handle them the title. The permit can also be bought at the DMV instead. All that's needed for this is an out-of-state address, which is required on the permit. I don't know how your state works but that's how it is here, we also don't have to mess around with notarizing stuff here (very few things to do with a vehicle need to be notarized).

why not ask them about a TP tag. transporter tag then take care of it where your heading.

It sounds like you are already resigned to being pulled over. So don't get caught lying.
Have your story straight and every part of that story backed up with documents in the same envelope.

The cars title, some receipts showing how recently the car has been under repair, something to show your old address and the new address.

Something to show that you have investigated how to get a license at your new home would be a good thing. Be polite and show that you're trying to do the right thing.

+1 Very nicely put. Honesty goes along way with police. Plus, it'll get easier and easier everytime you get pulled over. You'll have it down to a science 1100 miles later :D

Edit: Also, if something were to happen (such as a break down / flat tire). Your car would definately be towed if it's sitting off the road without tags. Something to think about also.

so they could toe my car just for not having tags? like if i get pulled over and he just feels like being a dick?

oh and im not 100 percent sure if its a felony offnce to put another plate on the vehicle but i know in nebraska its a 250 dollar fine if you make out your own peice of paper that says intransit with a date..

i dont relly have any reciepts to show the work ive done to the car, cause i bought all the parts over the internet.

wow never thought i would actually see this questioned asked in a life time but hey theres always a first.
first off if you truely wanna risk getting your car impounded, possible jail time or at least time in the back of the cop car to there local station to get your full story then go ahead and drive with out plates. perfectly fine right. now think to your self the first things a cop asks for when they pull you over. registration, proof of insurance, and licence right. now when you buy a car from say a used car lot or any dealer ship you wont have the full lagit registration but you will have legal documents for it and also you will have a temp tag stuck to your back windshield or to the area where your plate will go. see if you can go to a dealership or know someone with the ability to hook you up with a temp tag. It would be a whole lot better to go through the trouble of trying to get that stuff rather than saying bye bye to your car maybe half way on your trip. but its your car... i have seen crazier things done but only by the grace of god that they didnt get caught. and if you cant get those things think of mapping out a very good route taking crazy secluded back roads

i dont see why its that big of a deal.... i mean i was just thinking any cop that pulls me over will understand, why would i register, plate and tag my vehicle in louisiana where i purchased the vehicle when im moving to nebraska? then i would have to pay all those fees back to back twice... and i have my liscense and proof of insurance, i have my title and bill of sale. i was hoping the worst that could happen is i get a ticket, not towed.. i mean also i would hope that any cop would understand that im moving to nebraska and if he were to tow my vehicle i would obviously be stranded with knowhere to go but a cheap hotel and hopefully the cop would be descent enough to let me go.... but if he wants to be an absolute dick could he tow my car? knowone has really giving me a strait answer to that question yet

+2

But to the OP, at least get a permit for goodness sakes.
