I'm sorry if I haven't thouroughly searched, but I wasted about 3 hours today trying to remove the axle. Passenger's side axle came out in roughly 10 minutes but the hub bolt on the driver's side will not come lose.

My question is, what size of a socket do I need to make my 1/2" wrench fit on the bolt? Biggest socket I have is 1inch, and that is way too small.

Thanks guys.

Are you talking about the axle nut? the nut that holds the axle to the hub right? They should be the same size for both the driverside and passengerside. My question is what did you use to remove the axle nut on the passengerside? Anyways the size of the axle nut is 32mm or 1 1/4"

Thank you sir, but I already figured it out.

I used vice grips to remove the other one. (Yeah, I was surprised it broke loose too)

i just did my passenger side axle today. the technique i used to break the axle nut loose was probably not the safest but it worked great. i actually used a hydraulic floor jack to torque a 1 1/4 wrench and the nut came lose.

They sell a hub socket at your local auto parts store and it should be 32mm, but bring your nut just in case. You should use it when you put it back together or for future removal...

just another pointer. Put anti-sieze on the splines and you will never run into the problems of a seized axle in your hub.

yeah I just removed both my axles few days ago. I ended up tearing a ball joint boot so Im waiting for that part, but until then I'm taking apart the brakes and rotors and those rotors are being a PITA to come off I'm gonna get a couple 12mm bolts to run thru the rotors holesthat are stronger than the 12mm that holds the radiator support cus it stripped the ends on those babies.

update: got the rotors off. I just replaced the balljoint boot tonight and went to put the driver side axle in and its not wanting to go in the spline all the way it seems to stop at where the clip has to go over the ridges part inside in the tranny. I tried to bend the clip in more. but its not bending like i want.. for some reason the drivers side axle's clip hangs down (out) more than the pass. side. I dunno maybe its just a PITA to get them to snap in cus i remember they didn't want to come out easy either. I read the Tech article and it says" tap with a wooden mallet" I dunno about that? Any tricks to getting them in besides cursing and *trying* to be patient?

I've had the same problem in removal and replacement of that particular drive shaft. In my case I've been able to line up the spline and give a forceful shove of the shaft into the tranny. It's worked for me every time...

well I finally got the drivers side axle in. It took me a long time but I found out if you line it up good(someone holding or use some string) it helps big time. In removing and installing its all about getting it lined up so the clips wanna go in or out for that matter. If anyone doing this has torn there balljoint boot I have an extra. [email protected]
