Replacing my driverside axle. I did not remove the intermediate shaft from the block/trans. The hub is stuck in the shaft. (Axle is out, boot was torn bad so i seperated them.). Do I have to loosen the intermediate shaft for it separate from the hub? Hammer, screw driver, prybar... Nothing has worked so far.

I've read a few posts where guys have removed the shaft and axle together and it more or less comes apart, but i'm trying to avoid taking my downpipe off.

Snap a pic or two to illustrate what you're trying to do?

The C-clip on the axle that goes into the carrier bearing is a PITA to pull out if you don't pull the whole carrier bearing "intermediate shaft".
So much easier to pull the whole thing and pull it apart, and put it back together before just bolting it all back up. The "intermediate shaft" is easy to put in and pull out the trans due to no C-clip needed.
I once tried what your doing and didn't get the C-clip in ALL the way and my was popping in and out that carrier bearing causing massive wheel shimmy at high speed. DONT bang the end of the axle to get in the other end with the C-clip, you can destroy a new CV joint doing that. Good Luck!!!

I'm thinking i might have to do this. Only problem is I have an O2 eliminator downpipe and its such a f***ing pita to remove it from the turbine housing.

just wrapping up my big build and am about to put this back in, as you can see I never took it apart once I got a new one in, gotta treat it like one piece really for the easiest result. I know I've done this with the stock downpipe in place.

You got to pull it and pry at the groove near the carrier bearing...

Ive pulled the axle and shaft out numerious times when removing the trans. But, this is the first time trying to get just the driver cv joint out. I cursed this car after I heard the clicking noises and saw the grease everywhere. I just replaced the damn passenger axle 2 weeks ago!

This is the best tool I have found for this job. https://www.amazon.com/Steck-Manufacturing-71410-Axle-Popper/dp/B004IQMR8U

Doesn't help you now but such a small price for 5 secs of work. I had my car on my lift at my shop and had just recently replaced that axle. Still couldn't get it to pop out using my normal methods. Had to grab these tools from my box and popped out no problem.

Well, I rented a CV joint puller from autozone, but that still didn't work. I was finally able to get the shaft out without removing my downpipe. Once on the bench, the hub popped out like nothing. I wonder what makes it so damn tough to remove while still on the car. :shrugs:
