  Can it be done? My hands are too big to get into that space I think.

I have removed the 5 bolt plate... so I have all the space I'm going to get...

So........The end cup is still connected to the bearing... and it's not going to let go.
I assume the male end has melded itself and I am not sure what to do.

Is there a tool or techniques... Thanks in advance

I long brass drift and a 32oz ballpeen should be all that is needed to separate the axle. Climb under the car and take a whack at the backside of the cv cup. This should separate the cv from the carrier. If you need a hand, call me.

You have to pop it apart if you are replacing the axle. But if you are doing a trans swap/clutch job. You will need to atleast unbolt the carrier. On 2g's I don't even mess with the drivers side suspension/axle doing clutch jobs.
If the axle is bad and you need to change it. Hammer.
And its two bolts and the sub-shaft comes out too. Very easy to pop them apart out of the car...also with a hammer:D

I was just wondering if this worked or if you had to remove the carrier bearing to take out the axle assembly. Thanks

Yes, Chris and Sheldon got it taken care of.
All they were doing is replacing axles in Chris's GSX. As stated, if you are removing the tranny, you will have to unbolt the carrier bearing from the rear of the block and then the driver axle can just be removed as one piece.

Actually, the tranny can be removed without even touching the driver axle but to reinstall the tranny easier, you will have to at least unbolt the carrier from the rear of the block.

My inner CV boot is torn so I am just going to replace the axle and I just wanted to know if I had to take the whole assembly out of the tranny or just pop it out of the carrier bearing. And when you say hammer do mean hammer the sides of the bearing to loosen it up right, and it should just pull straight out...correct? thanks guys

When you hammer, you do not hammer on the actualy subshaft/carrier bearing. Yo will hammer from the middle of the car towards the wheel. On the inncer CV cup (usually painted green on OEM axles) its the part the big side of the CV boot clamps too.

I am having same problem. I took the whole unit off the car axle and carrier as one. I still can't seperate the two of them off the car. The thing is the axle is brand new I slid it on about 6 months ago and the car has never turned under it's own power.
