I have a '91 Talon, AWD, Turbo. Is it possable to lock the center and rear diffs and pull out the front CV shafts so I can use this as a drift car? I know there are spools out there for the diffs but was wondering if its a safe thing to do?

Thanks.

I've seen a video on TREMEK.COM of a RWD 1Ga Tallon before, not sure how they did it, but if you look under the TREMEK fourms for DSM, i'm sure you'll find it.

Rain + Awd = Drift. Do you wanna make it RWD? my friend had a viscous coupler elim. and maybe changed the back axles and his car was all over the road he can slide it sideway to easy if you ask me, but hey he can slide it in awd form too.

Yes, I want to make it RWD, so where did your buddy get the VC eliminator?

I'm so sick of the drifting dsm idea. AWD is sacred. If you want to drift, please buy a RWD. Don't hack up an AWD DSM to do it.

The rear diff was not meant to handle 100% of the load. I remember reading a discussion somewhere in a thread here that the rear diff was designed to handle only about 30% of the total torque. If you have a '91, I believe you're even without the stronger 4 bolt rear -if memory serves correctly. The only way I'd even consider doing it if I were you is to remove the entire drivetrain, flip the engine 90 degrees in the engine bay and mate it to a RWD tranny and rear diff. -Which is way too much fabrication effort and money to make any sense.

I think it's a waste of money but different strokes for different folks, whatever gets you off.

EDIT: removed my offensive comments

Sounds like you have never drifted before, don't knock it be for you try it!
most people that hate drifting, can't do it! My 2

My be look into conquest, they are RWD
Keys to drift- ice, water or a stable of poneys. Good luck!

You can make an AWD a RWD just by taking out the front axles but NOT recomended. Like Delta said, the rear axles arent ment to take the load. You would have get some beefy axles for the rear. Also, independent rear suspention is not practical for drifting. Get a car with a solid rear axle, like a 240 or something(easier to break the tires loose.)
Ialso agree with 91 eagle AWD, "dont knock it till you try it." Drifting is hella fun! I used to have (2) 2g RX7's that I used to run SCCA around parking lots. Theres no feeling like being on the edge of control.
P.S. I'd love to have a conquest too! They was hot shit back in the day.

Well that depends on how you define drifting. I've broken traction in many different vehicles many times, probably 3 dozen or more, most of them unintentionally due to icy weather, other drivers or animals. I've also done it intentionally a few times. Only 2 times have ended with the vehicle damaged. However, one of those 2 times totaled a jeep cherokee. I rolled it over 4 times after swerving and braking hard in the rain to miss a deer at 65mph. I agree it is fun going sideways, at least until you lose control over it.

What ignorance. Professional drifting is controlled mayhem and takes great driving skills. Try watching a professional drifting team running a track in perfect unison 3 cars side by side.

Plenty could argue that drag racing is one of the most primitive forms of racing...light is green and you go forward. Wow!!

And plenty of domestic drag queens think musclecar drag racing is "sacred" and no place for imports. They're also jackasses.

To OP...get yourself a 240 and do a jdm conversion. One of the best drift cars there are and they are cheap and easy to work on.

agreed drifting is great fun but so is a awd launch. Just a shame to ruin a great platform by making it rwd imo

Go here to get a little history on drifting. You should notice that that the majority of the cars are RWD to start with and have a SOLID axle vs independent rear suspention. You need to decide what you want: drift, drag, or road course. It all depends on how much you wanna spend. DSM isnt cost effective for drifting.

You don't have to make it RWD to drift, But if it's just a drift only car you want. Than Ya RWD with solid axle is the way to go.
Those who don't know how to define drifting, call it breaking traction
It's for fun, not to use to aviod a deer.
Give me a ice covered mall parking lot and I'll be calling into work every time!

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth. You can't just remove the front axle shafts. You will have to do something to the front bearing assemblies at the wheels because your axle is what holds them together. would be cool to see one done though.

Anybody seen that 1g do a three block burnout on streetfire.net ? It used to be an AWD.

If it's the same one I saw, when vid starts it's AWD. But when he truned around it would only spin the back. That guy must had stole that car or was on a test drive! LOL
man your quick!

Thanks 91 eagle. I think it would be a good spot for everyone unfamiliar with drifting.

The bearings your talking about are pressed into the steering knuckle. thats the hub assembly. The drive axle goes threw that hub assembly. In broad terms it will pull out like a driveshaft. It isnt that easy though. Its different for each side. Im just sayin that it can be done.

I understand what professional drifting is.
I was responding to the "don't knock it until you try it" line, with only saying I have experienced sliding, both purposely controlled and unintentional. I certainly would not call it professional drifting though.

It might not require as much driving skill, but I don't agree that it's primitive. No form of racing could fairly be called primitive.

I said AWD is sacred. I don't drag race and I don't own a musclecar. I do however think that any car that is competitive deserves to be on a track as much as any other, regardless of domestic or import. I think we agree here.

I think this sentence is pretty much summing up what I was getting at with my first post in this thread. 240sx > RWD converted DSM for what the OP wants to do.

If you are willing to spend the money they make entire sub frames and rear wheel drive conversions for like 1500 dollars. I can't exactly memebr site but i almsot bought it for my fwd.

wont gearoil also leak out of the trans after the axle's are pulled i know on a front wheel drive they will

take the front axels apart. Reinstall the just ends into the trans so you the trans thinks there still there. Get a welded center diff, then you have a RWD dsm then prepare to replace rear ends when they start breaking. Just my .02 Drifing while fun is a waste of time if I want to slide my car around I will get into my 5litre mustang. I would not hack a DSM to do it. Buy thats just me.

I really don't understand the fascination with drifting. It's a completely pointless waste of rubber IMO, and it will likely cost you loads of money in repairs when you f**k up, -and I can guarantee you that sooner or later you will f**k up. You are not going to just jump in a car and beat up on Tarzan Yamada. You'll slightly miscalculate one time, and hopefully only crunch your car and not kill someone. -Not to mention the shit you will break from the abuse you're dealing to a 15+ year old chassis. So, ...that gives you a jacked up car that you will be tired of fixing and won't be able to sell.

I think it's a waste of money but different strokes for different folks, whatever gets you off.

Im a DSM guy but have always driven Rwd nissans. I have learned wwwwaaaay more about how to control, counteract, recover, and push my car to the limits by drifting my 240sx over the last couple of years. It seems many of you have a misconception of how hard drifting accually is, it's not "putting your mustang or camaro around a wet corner", it is much more in depth. As a former auto-xer and drag racer it made it easier to learn drifting but by no means made it easy. As for the waste of tires comment... some people pay thousands on racing school... I choose to pay mere hundreds a year on used tires to drift next to and learn from some of the best drivers in the country. So before passing judgement on drifting, go to your next local drift event and ask to co-drive someones rwd car... most of us will let you with out even knowing you!

As for a RWD dsm... no way, even thought its an 11 on the cool factor scale. I have to say no b/c I bought my 240sx for under 3K and I have done virtually no repairs related to drifting, only genral maint.

P.S. Lighten up dood...
