so in the same week i bought my eclipse i broke the driver side door handl off. i decided to replace it my self and it took me like three hours and it was so pi$$ed by the time i was done that i almost sold the car about 3 months later my friend broke the passenger side off when he was gettin in the car i never fixed it cause it just didnt seem worth it then today i was gettin ready for class and i went out to start the car and the door was frozen i was very carful to not pull on the door to hard so i did the deal where i lift the handle up and pull on the door itself. i got it open no problem and started it let the car warm up for bout 20 minutes and went put to go and barely pulled on the handle and it broke off so now my car is running and has either door handle so i cant get in the car and i dont have a spare to get in the hatch either LOL

does anyone know where i can buy stronger door handles for this dsm like metal ones or like titanium alloy ones or somethin

1st. Take a coathanger and straighten it. Put a small "L" in the bottom of it.
2nd. pry the driver window out a little with a screwdriver.
3rd. place a wallet in the space between the window and window frame.
4th. slip coathanger into car and angle it down towards the hatch release lever at the bottom near the seat.
5th. pull upwards until hatch opens. Now you are in your car.
6th. You might not want to own a DSM. because iF working on a car for 3 hrs makes you want to sell it, you are owning the wrong car. i worked on mine for 8 hrs nonstop the other day.
It comes with the territory. Anyway at least you are in your car now.
good luck brah.

If you search for door handle on the forum, i found a thread where a dude was selling metal replacements for the arms on the back. I bought them and i think they were 16 bucks or something. Going to install them but looks like they will be 100% stronger. I broke my factory door handle and bought a 12 dollar replacement from china ...and it lasted a month in the summer until my fiancee broke it. Hopefully these arms will hold up and for 16 bucks its worht a try.

Just a heads up to anyone wanting better door handles using the china knockoffs. I've bought 3 of the $11 ebay door handles (2 2g's) and after breaking the first one I knew that there had to be a better way to fix the problem. If you pull the door panel off and look at the latch from the inside of the door itself you can see the linkage that attaches to the actuators. (hard to describe), just pull up on the door handle and you'll see the linkage going from the outer door handle down into the actuator. As you pull up on the handle that linkage in turn pulls up and then pushes another linkage down. Take that linkage and get a thick wire (I used a coathanger) and cut off about 2-3". Slide the coat hanger into this bottom linkage and twist it together like a zip tie.

Adding the wire in between the forks of the linkages essentially shortens the linkage making it so that you only have to pull up halfway (or so) on the handle before the door will open. It takes a HUGE amount of stress off the handle itself and I haven't broken any of the handles since.

Sorry my write up is kind of confusing. It's a quick one and if someone wants a better explanation as to it just PM me. I can try and get pics, but it's tough getting pics in the door there.

STM sells the metal ones.

Can you provide a link? I just checked their website and didn't find anything.

Oh and Tyeler18, I think I know what you're talking about. I have to pull m handles up to the very top to get it to unlatch, so I know it'll break any time now. I'll see if I can get a picture of what you're talking about.

^^ On both of my 2g's I can pull the handle half way up and pop the door right open. It probably cuts the stress in half (just a random guess), but it's definitely alot nicer on the handle. It's made it through 90+ temps all the way down to -20 temps so far and has been frozen shut a few times as well and still has yet to even feel weak.

I'll try and find a pic as I don't want to pull apart the door again to get at it. Once you see the linkage I'm talking about it probably takes 5 minutes to put the wire in and you're good as new. Don't even have to remove the door handle.

It worked perfectly!!! I took a couple pictures but for some reason my laptop wont recognize the sd card :/ When I figure it out, I'll post up pics of this.

Edit: To the OP, there was someone on this site selling little metal inserts for our handles, but I forgot his name. They're like 20 bucks or something, but from what I hear, they are worth every penny. Apparently, they make the door handle close to unbreakable. If someone has the name of the guy selling them, then please post up.

Why, buy metal handles they rust. email azdave, he makes reinforcements brackets has a how to guide also. Its for the 2g only., run around 15 bucks.

Not sure if he still sells them, I'm planning buying it when I have the funds my younger yanked hard on the passenger handle just detroyed it.

They look plastic oem not metal, its doesn't say if they metal. Very pricey but with holiday discounts we might save $$$, just have to ask.

Just install some remote door poppers and call it a day....okay, maybe not.

I'd go ahead and give those metal handles a try.
