While I am not new to the car scene thanks to my 79 Rx7, I am new to dsm's. I'm just wondering if there are any common signs of wear inside the 5 speeds that i should look for while I have my trans open. Car wouldn't shift out of second and i narrowed it down to the previous owner broke 1st gear tab on the 1/2 shift rod.

Anything in particular that i should look out for before i reassemble the beast?
any suggestions would be helpful :thumb:

If it didn't pop out of second and the previous owner broke 1st gear, I would recommend checking the teeth on the gear selector and on the gears for any wear. If he shifted hard he might of grinded gears and caused wear and later on might cause the gears to pop out. In any case its something id check if I were to crack open my tranny. Hope this helps bro.

1) To remove/install the 36mm nuts on the input & intermediate shafts place the tranny in both 1st and 5th gears at same time to hold the shafts. 5th is done by removing the spring pin holding the shift fork, then the fork, and then sliding the syncro sleeve into 5th.

2) A source of shifter play is the select lever shoe (MD712919) which rides in the ring of the control shaft (the shift levers on the outside of the tranny where the shifter cables attach to). It wears down causing excessive shifter play. To give you something to compare to a new one is 0.468" thick (the ring slot is 0.475"). To further reduce shift play (only by a small amount) replace the interlock plate bolt (the end of it wears down from shifting).

3) Take the time to do the preload spacer (shim) measurements as per manual (stay close as possible to the small end of the range). It will make all the difference in shifting. Most local tranny shops will never even do this due to the time it takes and lack of all shim sizes.

4) Here's a great rebuild article with many pictures: http://www.twingles.com/ideck/rebuild3/dretranny.htm

5) Check shift forks and sleeves for wear. Example: The 3rd-4th shift fork width part that fits into the sleeve should be 0.385". The synchronizer sleeve groove should be 0.390" wide.

6) File the reverse idler gear teeth tops back to a point so it will go into reverse easier.

7) Clean magnet.

8) Replace input shaft bearing and seal

9) Skateboard bearing mod on shift cables tranny end.

10) Check shift detent balls and springs

11) Replace axle shafts oil seals.
