I was wondering what people are doin to handle the gearing/LSD after turboing.... First things first, can anyone tell me the gear ratio on a stock 2gnt? My guess would be that it is somewhere in the high 3's... 3.9ish maybe... but i really dont know what i'm talking about when it comes to DSM's. I've been doin the BMW community for way too long.

Anyway.... Some of you guys are laying down some nice HP numbers. Obviousely, there is a need at this point for an LSD. My problem is... i've spent some time trying to find info on the different options of gearing for DSM's. And when it comes to LSD's there is no talk for the gear ratios.

But like i said.... i come from the BMW rwd scene, and gearing was changed with the differentials. Maybe thats different with front wheel drive cars. Actually now that i'm typing this out i feel kinda dumb for not knowing any of this when it comes to DSM's. I tried searcihng... but no luck. Thanks for the info guys... i need to be educated in this area.

Come one guys... some of you must have delt with this problem. If you turboed your car with the same gearing as stock you would be reving pretty high crusing in 5th on the highway. First gear alone would be a huge bother. Let me know what you think? I've been questioning this for some time now.

Some people purchase the Phantom Grip and some buy the Quafe LSD unit.

Tranny Gearing

High whp 2gnt's.. like over 300whp switch to the Neon transmission because it is a 3:55 final drive compared to the stock 3:94 gearing.

Thanks so much for the reply... I never knew that the tranny would be the thing to change gearing. In my '87 325is i had a 4.1 LSD and that thing was screaming on the highway... and it only had about 170hp, and thats not even at the wheels. Cant imagine what 300whp would be like in a 3.94. Actually, i am kind of surprised that people actually onyl do this once they reach 300. Honestly... if it was me i would drop that 3.55 as soon as i was over 200whp. I drove my friends 95 M3 a few times and that 200whp engine does pretty well with its 3.12 gear ratio. A popular mod is to upgrade it to a 3.46.... which is why i say that i'm surprised people waite to get to 300whp to drop in a neon gear box. But then again the M3's 6 cylinder has HP available all across the RPMs... where as for a four banger you want to rev it up there quicker to get to the HP. But then again, i've never driven a 300whp 4 banger. Oh well.... Thanks again for your response, haha i dont knwo why but it seems hard for me to get responses here.

Thanks, Dave

No, the responses come, it just people like to formulate their opinions and do research before they post. We don't like to talk about things that we don't know about, we got reputations to keep :thumb:

I'm also thinking that one reason we dont slap in neon tranny's and lsd's right away, is because we are fwd/awd. We don't exactly have to worry about kicking out, and the power is centered under the heavy part of the car.
Thats just a thought.

And I guess I"m being a hypocrit about posting stuff I don't know about, because my car is nowhere near 300hp. Oh well :rocks:
