Does this happen to all dsm trannys?

K i just bought a TSI AWD and the only thing that i can find wrong is when u go into reverse you cant give it any throttle until its fully engaged or it makes the most ugliest grinding sound ever? and also if it does this, will it frig up my tranny bad or just reverse?

tranny seems to be pretty damn good , im newer at driving manual caause i used to drive automatic but it grinds very little below 2300rpm in 3rd but maybe its just bogging, other then that its sweet, but i just cant sleep at night thinking about that reverse, its fine if i just let the clutch out with no gas at all but if the engine is running a little higher rpm then normal it will grind,

Same thing happened to me. Just put the car in 1st gear before switching it to reverse.

My tranny is brand spankin' new and sometimes the reverse does that... so embarassing... I think your fine dude.

Uni GST is right. 1st to reverse works good to remedy that problem. The reason this occurs is because the sincro's in the factory trany are junk and easily damaged.

dont even worry about it for some weird reason too it did it to me for awhile but then stops i give it time for the clutch to engage then put it in gear for reverse

puttin it in second... then popping the clutch then puttin it in reverse works for me... but yeah... ur fine... first grinds too if i dont' put it in second first

I have a 2nd gen eclipse. A guy I work with is doing mechanic work on the side. Told me to try putting it in 3rd gear before reverse. It works every time.

I have *NEVER* owned a car that reverse didn't protest in. 3 DSMs, a ford, a '99 Accord - all of them do. As a matter of fact, the only car I've ever driven that didn't grind going into reverse was a 2002 M3 Roadster.

Here's a solution to all of your reverse grind issues:

Put it in first, bump 5th, and then put it in reverse.

Silky smooth everytime, guaranteed.

The easy solution to this is to wait a second after pushing the clutch in before popping it into reverse.

What is happening is that the engine-side of the transmission is moving at the speed that your engine is idling. Since reverse is not synchronized, when you push in the clutch and quickly go into reverse, the gears clash since the transmission is still in motion.

If you let the transmission stop by itself first before engaging reverse, it will not grind.

As far as after market synchros go, I just had my '90 AWD trarry rebuilt with synchros from Team Rip Engineering and it shifts smoooooooooth. Check out their website: www.teamrip.com/awd.html for some killer parts. Their non-reusables kit for rebuilds also includes a trash filter (1g's didn't have one) a MUCH stronger magnet (factory one wouldn't work as a fridge magnet, I tried) and all around rocks. Make sure your mechanic knows the filter is after market, I had to show mine where to put it.

ive always had this problem , right when i start the car , and my foot is still on the clutch , its always a pain in the ass to get into gear.

but today , i shifted to 1st then R and bam ! no grinds !
