Good morning... well Short story but i bought a 91 gsx a week ago to add to my collection and it had been sitting for 9 years now. i did the normal tlc, freshed up the motor and head, all gaskets and went to fire it up and no fuel, I had put 5 gallons in there earlier. so i check the tank, and pump, then i pulled out the fuel pump and its covered in a 1/4 " of the old gas slim.... no joke. its nasty,

so My QUESTION IS .. has any one had this problem and whats the best way to clean it out, with out useing a case of carb cleaner LOL i was just going to presser was it but, thats a little 4" hole plus the drain to get every thing out of.

make since... thanks

pic coming asap

I've only seen it one time myself. My friends atv had been sitting for a while and it was nasty. Like glue or something inside the tank. Chances are it's like that in the filter, tank, lines etc. I don't know how you'd go about cleaning it.

Those Sta-Bil commercials are no joke. :)

And the whole inside of the tank looks like this..... its just one big nasty mess....
\
any one think i should just leave it in there and run a new fuel filer and pump filter?

i mean its stuck to the tank so i hope it wont come off for a while LOL...

If i were you, I'd get a new pump filter, fuel filter, and try to get some sort of addetive to clean the lines. Ideally you should just replace your whole fuel system to be safe. You don't want that junk to break loose and get into your engine.

witch i have done... new filters and also think about this, the car never ran in 9 years so all the gas tha was in the tank turned into gunk and what ever it is and reminds me of that dried gasket maker rtv shit really sticky, so i blew the lines out and replaced the filters , i prob just pull the tank if it starts to plug shit up....

another thought i highly dout any of it could get to my motor.... HINCE the FILTERs are there for a reason???

You could probably get a used gas tank from junkyard or another member on here for cheap.I wouldn't chance it.If a piece of that cloggs your fuel filter you'll have all sorts of drivability problems.

all very true.... yet most of the time any gas tank i get from the yard will have the same problem, thats y i wanted to know how to CLEAN IT OUT rather then replace it.... no matter what tank i get, "UNLESS" brand new i would have to clean... :hmm:

SO BACK to the basics..... HOw should i clean it or ### it and just by a new one... $200-250

i have a tank for 20 bucks i replaced it because at the time i couldnt get the screws that hold the pump in loose and a return line on the back of the tank will use a little jb weld but nothing major, your not going to get all that stuff out without spending some money and or opening the tank all the way and ya that is the worse i have seen i would just replace it and go from there, actually my tank wont work just realized yours is a gsx... sory

You are right that the fuel filter would stop any of it from the tank to the filter, but the fuel that is past the filter has done the same thing so you should take your fuel rail off and make sure it is not caked in all that sludge either before you fire it up the first time. Your local parts store should have some solvent or good old parts cleaner should work in cleaning it or find a machine shop that could hot tank you fuel tank for you also. Good luck on the project.

I fought this for a month on an old Datsun. I finally just replaced the tank with another, after trying all manner of gas solvents to clean it out.

It was the nastiest crap I've ever dealt with on a car.
