Does the clutch need to be replaced or is there a fix for this?

I'm looking to buy a 93 talon tsi and the guy who owns it told me that the only problem with the car is the clutch. He says it only disengages when its all the way down. If it's not all the way down, he says it'll grind into gear. What does this sound like to you guys? Also, does this mean you can't slip the clutch when trying to launch or does this only effect it when the car is not in gear? Thanks

well when i bought my car the guy said 3rd gear grinds, he told me the clutch needs some bleeding, so when i got the car i did that, and it helped a tiny bit, so its been 7months now, and i just replaced my clutch with a exedy stage 2 and a fidanza flywheel, my 3rd gear still grinds, so inconclusion i am going to replace my transmission, if you really want the car, just buy it, try and bleed it and see what happens, if not just buy another transmission, or have it rebuilt, im buying a tranny with under 30k miles for 300$ from hmotorsonline.com, they are pretty reliable.

well see i can't "just" do all that, a tranmission is a lot of money and so is a clutch, i need to be sure about the condition before i buy the car. And it's not just one gear that grinds when the clutch isn't all the way down, it's all the gears so i doubt its a tranny problem. Any other opinions?

Check the clutch pedal adjustment...

Clutch fork and pivot ball...as old as the car is I'm sure it is worn, especially if it has never been replaced. That can give you problems as described also.

If that doesn't fix it then check the pedal adjustments. Go here:

If that doesn't work then try checking the alignment on your shifter and look at the bushings on the tranny. If they are worn out then it is possible for them to cause grinding. I would also check the tranny fluid just to be safe.
