I have a 96 Gs Eclipse and I am trying to get a new Catalytic Converters or high flo cat. Ive been searching on ebay and ive seen a couple different Catalytic Converters some with bolts on each side others with 3 bolts and some with bolts in different areas. I was looking at the cat that is on my car now and I think the bolts on it match up to this Catalytic Converter.

could anyone tell me if they know is this would work for my Eclipse and if they had any advice for me

That should fit on your car but it looks like its more of a test pipe than an actual cat. I dont see any place for the rear o2 sensor on that pipe so you will possibly get a CEL for the rear o2, it is also not legal in California so you will want to put your stock cat back on when its time for a smog check.

The link to the ebay auction item is not a catalytic converter. It is a test pipe (a.k.a - straight pipe). Don't get that test pipe. I know Road Race Engineering sells a actual high flow catalytic converter. Have you checked your local exhaust shops? What's wrong with your stock catalytic converter? Also, try checking the classified section on this site and Craigslist.

Be wary of any "catalytic converter" under around $75, especially when they do not show a picture of the catalyst.

well I didnt pass a CA Smog test someone said it might be my cat so I was looking for a new one. Ive been calling Muffler shops and checking prices for a Catalytic Converter for my 96 Eclipse. I am being told that there are no after market Catalytic Converters for my eclipse none are certified for the 96 eclipse. I was told for an Oem Cat it would be $345. I called a Mistubishi Dealer and there price was over $500. Im being told the Universal Catalytic Converters are illegal. let me look up my smog test results and ill post it up and see what you guys can tell me thanks for the help

Here is my results

If I were you, I would change that fuel cap first. Order a new one from the dealer.

Magnaflow is one of the few companies out there that actually do make C.A.R.B and OBD2 legal aftermarket cats. Some people out there don't know this and will try to prove to you otherwise.

It looks like it failed pretty bad, have you done any maintenance lately? You probably do need a new cat, a tune up, plugs, wires, maybe a front o2 sensor. You can call that # on the bottom of the test results and apply for assistance to fix your car they can give you up to $500 to get it fixed. I did that once on another 2g I had & they sent me a list of places I could take it too and they installed a new cat and did the smog check and I didn't have to pay anything.

Summitracing.com has decent prices on replacement cats. Don't buy a cat from ebay, you could end up with nothing but a hollow pipe that fits in place of the OEM cat.

I bought the car like a month and a half ago. I'm not sure if it has had any maintenance recently. Since I just bought the car and it didn't pass smog. The car is not fully in my name. I cant get money from the state to help me get it fixed since I don't qualify

One of the most important things you will learn about Dsm's is ensuring maintenance. Take your time and check over what you are not sure of. Replace leaky gaskets, spark plugs, fuel filters, and maybe O2 sensors.

I don't know a lot about cars yet but i'm researching and trying to figure everything out. thanks for the advice

The best thing for you to do is go throught the Tech/DIY articles and also search for what ever you want to know. But remember, nothing beats personal experience.

Take a look at these. I got one for pretty cheap and it is OBD 2 and c.a.r.b certified.

If you do get a larger than stock diameter cat, make sure you bring the box to the smog guy if he asks questions.

You will also need to have flanges welded on.

Does anyone know what the stock Diameter is on a 96 Gs? And What cat on that page that he linked would I want for my there are 3 different types and I wasnt sure witch one I need

The stock diameter for both turbo and N/T cars is 2 inches. Try 642-94305 on the link I gave you above. It is .25 inches bigger than stock but, should bot up just fine. Also, do not bump.
