Do you have to line hone a head to swap cams?

I have been having bad luck with using cams from different heads. They never turn over by hand as smooth as the stock ones. Ive turned one by hand (the cam with a wrench) and when the cam is in the head it came with it "clacks" so fast the wrench hurts your hand. Then I put another one in from another head and I noticed when you turn it it doesnt give that clacking sound as the lobes pass over the rocker arms.

Do you have to line hone to swap cams or do something different? And I ALWAYS use the caps that came on the head.

No you don't have to when using the cam caps that came on the head. The only time you need to is when you change the clamping force or use different cam caps. Your cam caps create perfect circles on your head. The other head will have perfect circles with its cam caps on. Since they both have perfect circles it doesn't mess with the cams. Are you putting in more agressive cams?

Thanks, dont know what happened. I only torqued them to 13lbs the second time around to assure I wasnt over tightening them. I am getting the cams that came with the head to try it again before I buy another head.

Are these more agressive cams than what were in it? If they are then they are going to be harder to turn.

Did you put the caps back in their original locations & directions? I just dis-assembled my 2g head,& noticed that the caps are marked with tiny stamps,e1, e2, i1, i2, etc, with little arrows all pointing towards the front of the head. Theoretically, if the caps go back in their original locations & orientation, you should still have perfect circles in all the journals.
