do i need a fuel pressure regulator? i have a walbro 255, boost around 16psi...kinda ruff idle and some smoke while boosting...i should ###### get an air/fuel gauge too right?

Everyone will tell you that you do, and i think they're right.

Personally i run a high pressure wally 255 with the stock FPR and my A/F at idle is about 14.5.

I haven't bothered to check the pressure because as long as the ratio is OK i'm not really concerned about it.

I've run over 100 psi on injectors in another car (not a DSM) without issues, so i doubt a few extra PSI will cause a problem.

That said, i am having an issue with the number 4 cylinder running too rich, but i would think if it was due to pressure i would have that same issue in all cylinders

I would suggest it as they are a good investment and cheap insurance really. The air/fuel gauge...if you are talking narrowband don't bother. You should definitely get a wideband if you are going to tune at all though and it's always nice to just keep an eye on your fuel as well even without tuning.

Agreed. a/f gauges are useless on a narrowband.

my talon tsi fwd turbo is boostin 8 lbs on a mildly built motor with 8 to 5 to 1 compression forged pistons. with bc 272 cams manely spring an retainers . i have a walbro 255 fuel pump on stock fpr. i have a roough idle to but ive also got cams idlin at 900 to 1000 rpms. i have a boost leak i cant find . my wastegate wont open. im running the factory boost controller too. i have a boost guage but its not hooked up . need help.

actually ...... fuel press is very important...:banghead:

if you have stock fuel lines the pressure is never dispersed evenly...

this link is to vfaq and under the fuel section , at the bottom of the page the link says fuel system upgrade... i would segeste you give it a look over.

also to the orignaL POSTER. can you grab your fuel press reg and turn the end part where the vac line goes on.... if you can turn it its prob leaking

well 8 pounds on what turbo?

did you check the tb for leaks and i cant belive you have i leak with that low boost.. it should be a huge leak at that low...

anyway, take the factoy boost controller off and re -do the vaccum

plus hold up.......

you said your waste gate doesnt open yet your getting 8 lbs somehow... wtf?WTF

if the waste gate 'DOESNT OPEN" u will always build boost.......
so you should be runnin 20+ lbs or what ever the turbo will push...:banghead:
AND with your boost gauge not hooked up how do you know what boost ## runnin to begin with.......

im lost............LOL:barf:

You will need and fpr. You can get away with out running one but better safe then sorry! also pick up a wideband those are always needed

I have yet to get one, i'm also running 255 with 650CC, then again i haven't had it on for very long, so it's matter of time till the stock fpr goes out. But until then i'm sticking with the stock one since budget is always an issue and why fix something that isn't broken. I have plenty of other things to fix as is already, but a lot of people will tell you to rather be safe then sorry. So it's up to you, as far as i know it's not over running my fpr, and a new one is a grip so until then, i'll wait.

I'd run one just to be on the safe side like everyone else says. They really aren't too expensive and it might avoid future problems. Yeah get a wideband too. Then your set. Good luck

This is a graph we did several years ago on the stock 2g fpr with a walbro 255, not even a rewired pump. As you can see, runs pretty rich at idle. Check out our site for bolt on fpr kits ;)

You, and this article ( SteveTek Labs Research: High Flow Fuel Delivery System ) saved me some major headaches with injector flow testing.

I didn't realize the lines would choke the output of the pump enough to cause uneven fuel dispersion, but it makes perfect sense.

That explains why cylinder 4 is running rich, and it also explains why im getting knock with conservative timing and an 11.0 A/F....cylinder 1 must be very lean.

I'll be doing lines ASAP.

Thank you!

if you upgraded your fuel pump, you definitely want to get a FPR, especially once you start upgrading your injectors

If you have a rough idle and it is smoking under boost you are getting too much fuel. If you plan to stay at 16psi the cheaper option would be to swap in the stock fuel pump because you don't need to upgrade the fuel pump to a 255 for 16psi.

yes the car will run and drive without an aftermarket fpr, it will just be rich. Some people that don't have a wideband or fuel gauge don't realize or know that they're rich so they think they are fine but in reality they are losing power and gas mileage

i have a wally 255 on factory engine setup. what could happen if i don't get a fpr? i got the wally ### the fuel pump needed replaced and i just went ahead and upgraded. i would like to avoid buying a fpr ### im lacking in the funds to do so.

Don't flip out about it, but you should have one. I've read of people (1G owners) running a couple years without one with no major problems. I'd keep the 255 in there but start saving up for an afpr and search the classifieds for a good deal.

you got my vte: YES:thumb:

:ohdamn:

How much did you pay for your car?
