London,
I have a 92 tsi awd. The previous owner did a engine rebuild as well as some other stuff and I think he may have welded the diff. The tires chirp and pop somewhat during low speed turning, navigating parking lots and the like, and from what I have read these are characteristics of a welded center diff. My Question is if there is anything else that can cause this?

Only way to tell for sure would be to remove your rear end. It's not really that hard but very tedious and if you had two people it helps. You never know if you could have a very aggressive LSD or a welded rear. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think there suppose to spin in the same direction.

Another thing is, like myself, you could have a messed up centre diff which made my car bahave exactly as you described. I think it was some carrier bearings in my case, but it could also be the u-joints. open you centre and rear diffs, if it so pleases you and check the bearings and u-joints.

Ya it sounds like you have a welded diff to me, cause I bought my DSM like that and the guy I bought it from told me he welded it. When I go around tight corners or have to back up the outside tire always slips and will chirp. One thing I was wondering though and hope some one can answer my question, where do you weld to cause the diff to lock. So if someone could answer this for me that would be cool.
