So I have an NGK AFX Wideband and I really don't want to run the stock narrowband sensor. I was wondering if anyone has ever made a circuit to convert the wideband signal to narrowband.

It seems pretty easy to me. If you just found what voltage was equivalent to 14.7AFR, and built a simple opamp comparator using that value. Add some hysteresis and maybe some lowpass filtering, then an output amplifier to make sure you're swinging between 0-1V.

Has anyone ever tried this, or heard of anyone trying it?

On a completely separate topic, I may be in the market for a new wideband setup with a built in narrowband simulation :thumb:
 
haha ya I'm bidding on one on Ebay... but I love having an excuse to make a little circuit.
 
Narrow band sensors are not accurate over the full range like wide band sensors are.

No circuitry is going to turn a narrow band sensor into a sensor as accurate as a true wide band sensor.

I think you misunderstood his question. It's the other way around. Wide -> narrow like many of us do with our innovate widebands.
 
I don't think this is this simple. The main purpose for the little controller box that comes with WB's is to accurately control the heating element of the sensor itself. WB's are temperature sensitive and need to be heated and held at the appropriate temp (I think it's around 850C). This is also the reason why you shouldn't have the sensor mounted to close to the exhaust valve and recommended some inches distance back as the exhaust temp coming straight out of the port is hotter than the WB sensor calibrated temperature. This will overheat the sensor and the AFR reading will not be right. This is also why WB's have 5 wires; signal, reference, signal grd, heater power, & heater grd. To do this you would need to incorporate a power circuit to heat the sensor and hold it at the correct temperature too.
 
Ya I have all the equipment to run the wideband correctly. I just want to simulate narrowband for the closed loop operation of the ecu. I'm fairly confident that when you get a wb that simulates a narrowband output it probably is just doing a little comparison like the opamp circuit would. I just wanted to know if anyone has attempted this.
