How hard is it to take a 5 speed AWD tranny a part? i need to get the 3rd gear synchro replaced. somebody told me, the trannys come apart pretty easily if you take your time. i was going to have a tranny shop press the gears off, and get the new synchro put back on the shaft. but i was going to do the intital tear-down of the tranny to save money since im trying to get this done on a small budget..

my dad said its not worth my time/money doing it myself bc ill just break it?
but its not like im a mental retard with a hammer..

What you guys think?
(i have the chilltons manuel with the exploded view of tranny)

It is pretty difficult. It is about the only thing I don't dare try on my car. Lots of parts that have to go back on in exactly the same order.

If you want to do it yourself, go and download the W5M33 transmission rebuild manual from Scribd.com.

Otherwise, do a search on here as I have written and posted numerous teardown instructions for people wanting to do it themselves.

You can't download from SCRIBD.com unless you upload something or are a paying member, but you can still view it Here!

It's honestly not all that difficult, I have taken 3 of them apart and changed a few parts, but I have not taken the gear trees apart before. I know there are spaces and tolerances that are very tight, you could probably take the gear trees out and have the 1 tree rebuilt, but they will not guarantee it that way.

Just take your time and if possible video tape yourself taking it apart as a backup, because there are bearing spacers inside that are different thicknesses and have to be in certain orders. I just numbered them with a sharpie before I took them out.

Good luck! :thumb:
