I just installed a different head after my timing belt went. Everything is back together and the break-in period is over. Last night i revved past 5,000 rpm. for the first time and noticed it was struggling, I let off at 5,500. Then a riced-out Honda cruised by so i stepped on it, went to about 6,000 rpm's, now theres a huge cloud of smoke behind my car. I opened the hood to notice my dipstick shot up, and oil sprayed all over the underneath of my hood, then dripped all over the motor and exhaust. What could be the problem? I already replaced the PCV valve and does the same thing???

OK little back gound!! i bought a car that has been sitting for the last 2 years!! they parked it i guess b/c the water pump went bad!! well after a year they had the water pump fixed and the car would not start and they gave up!! there it sat for another year!! I bought it! and found out the computer was bad so i replace the computer and could not get it to start!! well after fixing and checking many things i got it to start

NOW THE PROBLEM

I got it to start after cranking for like 3 min stright!! it started and then died so i tryed again and again after 3 mins it strated i held the gas to the floor tell it stoped sputtering and smoothed out i reved it a few times then left off the gas it died!! so when i looked under the hood!! OIL ON EVERY thing i could not tell where it was comming from but when i looked the dip stick was all the way up! so i don't know if it was from the dipstick or not!! but that is where it seems to be comming from

What would cause this!

If the car sat for two years, you are probably looking at having to replace most of the gaskets. I hope you changed the oil before you started the car up, 2 year old oil is no good. As far as the oil spewing, it could be from the dip stick, but more than likely a lot of your gaskets have cracked. Go to NAPA, they have a solution you can stick in the oil that lets you find oil leaks with a black light, let it sit for a while and then start the car and have it run for as long as you can. Then take a black light to the engine bay, you will be able to trace where any leaks are coming from.

(Hi again, haha)

Everything these guys said is right on ^^^^^

However, I'd like to add that you should also check your PCV valve. That's a big cause of dipsticks popping out, etc.

Don't cover up a problem with a backyard fix. On a nearly stock car holding the dipstick down is a good way to ignore a major problem. Dipsticks pop out due to excessive crankcase pressure. First thing's first. Replace the dipstick with a 2G dipstick (They're made a little better and are enterchangable). Then replace the pcv. Run a compression test first and foremost.

Ok first off!! i have to get the motor worm for a compression test!! and i can't start it would out it blowing oil every where!!! My intire engine bay is coverd!! the hood was up and it blew it over the fenders front bumper fire wall not a thing under the hood did not get cover!! i did not see it doing it b/c it was dark out side!! I under stand it blowing the dip stick but HOW THE HEll would it blow that much oil from the dip stick!!
The black light thing again i have to start the car to do that and oil will go all over me and in thing 2 feet around the car LOL

I"m not sure!! but i check the dip stick and it was dry it blew all the oil out of the motor!!

I don't have a book for the car so what is the PVC AND where is it located!

I have a 2G and I don't know how different the valve cover is, but it is located on the valve cover. One hose will go to the BOV, the other will go to the intake, that is where the 2G PVC is, and yours should be similar, I would think. See Pic.

BOV has no relation to the PCV. A small S curved hose goes from the valve cover (PCV) to the intake manifold. Regardless of generation.

OK when i get tothe PCV what am i looking for~how will i know if it is bad or good!!~

and when i try to start it why does it take me cranking for like 3mins for it to decied to start?

"BOV has no relation to the PCV", I know that. I was just saying there are two hoses coming out of the valve cover.

Dude, you REALLY need to get a service manual. If you have an AutoZone, Advance, OReilly's or PepBoys near you, any of them should carry it (or at least be able to order one in for you).

A quick test for the PCV valve (if I remember correctly, it's been a while since I changed mine), if you can blow air through it, it's ok; if not, you need to replace it. Regardless, it's like a $5.00 part, so you might just want to throw a new one on. Sounds like it's not doing its job, from what you described. You'll need a 15mm wrench to replace it. The part is the same for all 1g engines.

Here is a FAQ guide to replacing it: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/pcv.htm

Yea i got a book on order!! with auto zone!! Just have to go get it!!

Ok how about the hard starting problem!! i wish i could record it LOL so you could see what it is doing!! it cranks and cranks and slowly comes to life and i have to keep cranking and hold the gas tell the rpm slowly go then let off the key to keep it running!! Is it timming i want to compression test it but i have to get the car worm!!

Perform that compression test like ddavisaf suggested, cold compression numbers can still tell a lot. Do not pinch or modified your dipstick tube like the tech article said, unless you want to do more damage. This is what I would do.

1. Line up the timing marks to make sure the previous owner's water pump project was done correctly.

2. Make sure your pcv and breather, both off the valve cover, are properly routed.

3. Perform a compression test, both dry and wet, this will tell you if the rings are bad causing excessive blow by.

4. Perform a boost leak test, open the oil cap and listen for hissing. This will tell you if the pcv valve or valve seals are bad allowing pressure to enter the crankcase.

ok is there a way to check make sure timming is right with out takeing the belt off!! i do believe it is right!! b/c i do'nt have any bent shit tho i might!! I don't know about to just give up!! this is why i sold my last talon b/c it always broke! LOL

I don't think it would be head gasket!! might cause the starting problem!! but i have no clooent in the cyclenders!! So i don't know!! i'm going to go out and pull the plugs again and stick a light down in there see what i can see!!

Follow the directions given here and put the #1 cylinder in TDC, make sure that the cam dowels are both at 12 o'clock and both cam timing marks are lined up with the sprocket center bolts.

I don't know about to just give up!! this is why i sold my last talon b/c it always broke! LOL
So you go and buy another broken one that has not been running for 2 years, not a smart move if you ask me, probably easier to just fix your old Talon.

ok i will do that thanks!!

Umm as for the old talon!! it started life as a fwd turbo auto converted it to 5spd then tranny went replaced it with new clutch/plate/flywheel/trowout and well 3 weeks later trowout clip broke and killed clutch replaced it and motor went month after that!! got a new one,, then turbo went so yea i was getting sick of it LOL sold it one day i was pissed and have hated my self ever since then LOL!!

Well i'm going to go look at the timing!! when i get it to TDC it the cam marks should be lined up if not!! am i looking at bent shit or!! if it's only a tooth or so off i'm good!!

If it is one tooth off how do i go about getting it back!

The link I posted is for timing belt replacement, read through that link and you will learn how. Checking timing marks probably has nothing to do with oil out of the dipstick unless bending valves also damaged the pistons and cylinder walls. You still need to perform that compression and boost leak test as well as crankcase ventilation situation to find the cause of excessive crankcase pressure.

Well the PCV is good!!

Umm i need to go check the timming!
I"m sure it is lined up but never know!

and i can't do compression test tell i get my compression tester back

and how do i do boost leak with out have the car running!

I will tighten the clamps!! see if that makes a difference at all!

As for biss screw how would that effect the car not being ther!! when i get the car some one silconed a bolt in the hole!! So yea! the just silconed around the head not in the hole!

In your original post you said you bought this with "a bad water pump." If the head gasket is NG you could pressurize everything, crankcase and cooling system, forcing oil and water everywhere. I would do the following - check all the timing marks as described, go to the Mitsu dealer and have them actually show you the correct wiring for the coil, this is #1, #2 and so on, as I'm convinced you still don't have this right yet either.
Fill the system with water and run it best you can to get stuff circulating. Look real close for oil in the water and/or water in oil.
I hope this helps in some way.

OK i have the fireing order right!! firend brought his over and i got the order off it!! Oil don't ahve any water in it it's clean!! freash oil change!! So i'm lost!

I have a similar problem. Everytime i get to WOT and hit full boost, i smell oil burning, see smoke comin out. Pop open my hood and theres oil absolutely everywhere. But when i open the hood, the oil dipstick isnt popped up, its back into its tube. nIm assuming its the dipstick because of the oil above it on the hood. I took off my pcv valve and cleaned with with some carb choke and shook it a little bit. I had no time to go to the parts store and replace it. I ordered a new dipstick recently because my stock dipstick actually broke. the top white handle broke off the rest of the dipstick. I'm not sure if this is from wayyy too much crankcase pressure or just a bad dipstick. I did a dry compression test. My car has 95k miles and i got 175 first 3 cylinders, 180 on the last cylinder. Not bad at all. But do you think a new dipstick would be the solution to this problem?
