This is a general question regarding the fuses under the hood...

There are, for example, 3 fuses on my 1G mounted to the + terminal of the battery that are significantly larger than a typical automotive bus fuse although they are not rated much higher than a typical fuse, 20A and 30A.

This is the first car I've owned that uses this type of fuse and I am curious what makes them different. Why use these large fuses instead of the small fuse of the same value???

I'm just guessing and could be wrong, they are perhaps weatherproof and since they are not in a fuse box must provide their own box? Like I said, just a guess.

Good guess but both styles are used in the same fuse/relay box on the passenger side of the engine bay so it's not a weather thing.

LOL oh, sounded like it made sense when I wrote it. IDK but the bigger ones a female and smaller ones are males. I'd google it but I'm on my Wii :)

I found the answer in another forum... The larger square'ish fuses are slow blow while the smaller standard plastic automotive fuses are fast blow.

These fuses are described as "Low Profile Female Maxi fuse" and are only different in package to the blade type Maxi fuses that have become popular in stereo installations... the ones that look like oversized automotive fuses.

male Maxi fuse (slow-blow) and standard ATO automotive fuse (fast-blow)

Good to know.
