Why is it that randomly around some online parts shops, as well as around the forums, some parts don't fit a 90 DSM but will fit every other 1G? So far I have seen this most often with throttle bodies and short shifters. Any info would be great, thanx.:talon:

Such a strong word , Discrimination . How about lack of parts . You have 1 model year that is the bastard. Wait until you need an Ecu . Sponsors are not going to develop parts for 1 model year . Bottom line is still $$$$$ .

'90s were the practice version for the rest of the 1G's.
They almost got everything right with the next release except for the rear diff and front brakes. Then they took a few steps back with the projector lights and 7 bolt engines.

Steve

Eh, I still like the beefier 90 shifter assembly. It just looks solid and well-made... a shifter you could bludgeon someone with. And some short-shifters (if you really need one) can be modified to fit the '90.

Sadly, we got the kludge. Biggest rods and pistons, but a thrown-together ECU.

Same applies to the early 2g's, like where some rotors were vented and some weren't. It makes it a little more difficult for us to find parts, but it's far from impossible.

You forgot something, the 90's had the External Oil Coolers which were better then all of the models including the 2g's.

i never researched this so i figured i'd ask u guys while we're shitn around in this thread.

Is it easy to use the 90' tb on the 91+ cars? and is it easy to use the 91+ tb's on the 90' car? How? :)

The wiring/harness of the TPS is different btw the 90 and 91-94 but is easily modified. I'm in the process now of installing a '93 TB in my '90. For ease of wiring, I picked up a 91-94 main harness TPS plug with pigtail which I'll wire to my main harness.

I remember someone telling me the water Inlet/outlet of the FAIV on the 91-94 interferes with that metal brace connecting the head to the TB, but my intake (JMF) will not be using that :dsm:

Yes they are different but all you need to do is swap the bracket along with the TB. :thumb:

Everyone is failing to mention that almost (if not) all 90's have an EPROM ecu. +2 for us ('cause that is so way cool).

EPROM +2
Brakes -1 (everyone swaps to the two pots anyway).
22 spline Xfer & Tranny -1
Oil Cooler +1
Oil filter housing that doesn't crush when tightened +1
Beefier shifter = 0
6 Bolt +1

Total = +3 Therefore, 90's are the best DSM there is!

I figured as much :) I hate cutting into the main harness. My wiring is better than most but still. Who says you need that shark fin piece of crap? I just put a bunch of washers on the studs and threw the shark fin away.

Also I didnt know the 90's had the eproms. LOL never bothered to look into that either, I have dsmlink for my 95 talon, I've thought about getting it for the 90' laser but I want it to be 99.999999% stock.

While there might be more EPROM ECU as a percentage in '90 cars than any other years the numbers don't seem to be that skewed. It's just untrue that most 90 cars had EPROM ECUs.

Steve

It would make sense if more 90's had them because as said before they were the practice year. Eproms are more expensive than roms but it is expensive to get a mask made to produce the non-programmable chips. So they would most likely use eproms til they were sure they found the right set-up. But its hard to say if that would be enough to sway the numbers.

Sorry Steve, my bad. I read that on VFAQ or the old DSM website at some point when I first got the car. :sosad:

Shifter is beefier, but also has the longest throw of any of the years. :( So it evens out, I guess. :D

And damn right about the popup headlights. Now if only we could figure out a way to rig a pair of projectors, so they could be run up or down without losing (as much) light output. :D

You know, with the covers yanked the visibility is actually really good straight ahead but you still loose the sides.

I put my covers back on and the difference is dramatic. They kill all the light coming through.

I've seen links to replacement halogen lights with removable bulbs that are supposed to be a lot brighter.

By the way, I rewired the stock blinkers on the front as daytime runners by just adding a power line to the third hole in the connector and running it to my fog lights (already wired as daytime running lights). Peice of cake and it looks sharp as hell having all the lights across the front on. I'll post pictures as soon as I get my laptop back from the repair shop.
