Dad's looking at a 99 Eclipse for me!!

Well, i recently got accepted into Coastal Carolina University, and with that, my dad is wanting to buy my first car. My mind has been made up for the past 2 years. I want a 1997-99 Eclipse gs/rs (no turbo, going to college, need it dependable, insurance). im currently 17, ill be 18 July 21st. Well, im currently living in Charlotte, NC with my brother and sister while my parents are in Virginia. Well, i found an eclipse on autotrader at a near by dealer where my parents live. its a 1999 OZ Eclipse 61k miles, silver, auto, black leather, all the fixings. it even has a bra on it so it has been protected from scratches. its a trade in by a couple who just bought a jeep cherokee. im not that excited that its an auto, i want a stick, but u cannot argue with a free car. It dont really matter to me, im not a performance junky and i dont know enough about them to make them a fast street car. IM just doing like a header, full cat-back, cai, rims, a few exterior mods, nothing major. im gonna fix up my interior a little bit too. they were asking 12 for it, but i emailed the guy, who is sending me additional pics and he said the price just dropped a good deal, but has not updated on how much it costs now. I just told my dad about it today, and he and my uncle is going up there monday to see, as they have a day off work. my dad seemed interested, now if i get it or not, i have no idea, we been through some financial trouble lately, but its a possibility. I sure hope something works out. Alright, sorry so long, just thought id tell u about it.

I have the same car and love it my is a manual though and have done some mods. I bought mine for 12,500 and it only had 30,000 miles on it.

The problem with bras is they protect the paint from the sun..then when you take the bra off some 60K later...generally the front is darker than the rest of the car.

If I wanted to look into a sporty car that is reliable, then I probably wouldn't get a eclipse..I'd go the toyota route.

I say it's over priced. I cna't really say a turbo would be more a month. When I was searching for a car I gave my insurance agent a top ten list of cars, anywhere from a '98 Civic EX - '03 WRX, the price for insurance was within $200 of each other.
It looks like a clean car, but take a look under that bra. Could be some water damage.
It looks like Sk8er07999 has a pretty nice car. Has big wheels, definitely worth a look.

yeah man i paid 10K for my car. Its a 99 turbo, and only had 54K miles. Had a few mods too, I definetly agree with the others, that car is way overpriced. Be careful.

I thought so to guys...but see, in Roanoke, eclipses are VERY expensive, because eclipses are not as abundant. i have seen one just like it for 15k at a delarship last spring. they do overprice it, but then again, he dropped the price and thats not also counting what kind of deal my dad could work out. ya never know. shit, there are RS's for 9-10g's. Im sure ill find the right car, may not be this one, but im sure ill find it. i want one exactly like this one, except a manual. if i could have it anyway i wanted, it would be a black 99 oz, with black leather instead of tan and a stick. now that would be awesome. but oh well, time will tell.

*EDIT* also, about the bra...if i was to get the car and the paint was faded, i would just go ahead and get me the buddy club 2 front and put it on and get it repainted. but im sure if its faded, my dad wont buy it. oh well, ill find out everything monday.

if they're expensive in your area why not go on autotrader and find a less expensive one a little further from you?
my GSX has been ok so far in terms of reliability, but for the kind of money you can spend i'd get a WRX instead

Dont let them discourage you from the non turbo's. ya i wish i would have got a GS-T or GSX but i still love my non turbo. its a great car. as for an auto, well, my parents bought me my car too. i see what you mean by saying its a free car, but try to push the stick idea. My dad didnt want me to get a stick cause he thought i would crash cause i would get distracted with my ADD, but i told him i didnt want a car unless it was stick. every sweet car he would show me that was auto, i would say no i want a stick. It sounds dicky for getting it free, but i wasnt going to get something i didnt want. so just try to push the idea if u really want it. I eventually got my stick. And dont go with the 3000gt. my friend has one, and even though its engine is 50% bigger, and it has 80Hp more, they are pretty slow, because they are really heavy, and there arnt any mods out there for them. i was nearly as fast as him before i had any mods, and my friends 193hp mustang kills him. and he has tried to mod it but he cant find anything for it, cause there isnt much out there.

My parents were the exact opposite. By shifting I concentrate more on driving, with an auto I daydream.

sorry but that price for that N/T is very very overpriced. And if you want N/T i personally wouldnt go Eclipse or mitsubishi for that matter. The integra GSR is good, so is the Toyota Celicas (a 2000 GTS runs at around 13k) .. those things run 180hp with a 6 speed tranny..

Really think this car decision over.

:laugh: ya they thought that i would have to think about the shifting, therefore i wouldnt be thinking about the road. But i just told them that when i get used to it it will be second nature and i wont even have to think about it. so they finally let me get it. havnt had an accident due to me not paying attention yet! like i did with there car's. the only one i had wasnt my fault, i turned the wheel going pretty slow on some ice, and the dsm decided it wouldnt turn, and i went off the road. no bad damage, just a bent wheel bearing. its all fixed.

Yeah i understand....see the way my dad said it was like this. If its an automatic and the car is a great price, then he will buy it. But if he finds a better deal with a stick, then he will get that too. See, he is going for what we can find/afford. We are financing my car. And to the guy talking about celicas and integras....no. I dont want them i think celicas look like shit and my cuzin had an integra so i dont want one. I want an eclipse and thats that. My parents really like them too. But yeah, my dad said he will teach me stick if i was to get one...he is one of the best drivers i have ever seen. my dad used to street race his 69 GTO Judge back in the day that he built from the ground up. Hes really good. But i mean, it all comes down to what kind of shape the car is in, the price...to my dad, transmission dont make a difference. and for you that say, well if u cant find a good deal on an stick, then wait. Well, i need my car soon. I am getting ready for college. Oh well, we will just have to wait and see. Thanks for the replies people.

trust me and the other people on here, the N/T eclipses are not really fast at all. I mean if your going for all body and looks its alrighty. But the 420a for being NA isnt very reliable compared to its Honda/toyota/nissan competition

My dad was not able to look at the car Monday due to 3 inches of snow. Saturday, I am going to Roanoke to visit my parents and we are all going to look at it and drive it, so it works out much better. I found out the car has a remote starter installed on it. And yes, I am going for looks...but i do not want another car, 3000gt is not even an option. Its all about what I want...i dont want celicas or hondas or integras. My mind is made up. But I am also putting a CAI and a full cat back exhaust with a header. Its not much, but it will improve it a bit. I just want a real nice car that sounds good and that will look great while im driving it. Thank you everyone for your input. i really appreciate everything. Sunday night, when I get back, I will have the scoop on the car. And i emailed the guy and asked him if the paint was faded underneath the bra, thank you for telling me that, i didnt even think about it. Alright, im out. Thanks!

I was in your position once... my parents would have bought me a n/t we actually test drove one it was a manual, with cai... well i actually thought it was a fun little car, it was about as fast as my 2.5 v6 sebring that i had... but i ended up just waiting and i found a perfect deal on my awd talon.... '96 55k mi.. for 9k$$... if i were you i'd wait and get one thats a little less pricey...and maybe w/ a turbo

i had to save up and buy it myself.. but it was worth it... and my insurance agent considers the awd a safety option... so i end up paying only 10 bucks more than when i had the sebring...
