Cylinders or rings

I bought ITM pison rings off Ebay and the !st ring gap is .015inch and the 2nd ring gap was .028inch. Now those were the biggest of the 4 cylinders, so do you think its the rings or the cylinder being to worn???

Well with new rings the odds are the bores are going away. By the way in the good book ( FSM ) it states new limits for the top ring new is.0098>.01777 and second is .0138> .0197 with a service limit of.031

There are your ## you make the call.

The looser the clearances the better the power (less internal friction). What are your wall to piston skirt clearances thats the # to be concerned about.

Conversely, too loose and you risk piston slap.

A 4" snap guage and a 4" outside micrometor should do the job:thumb: Mesure the piston about 1/2" up on the skirt and then with the snap guage mesure the bore at the widest spot and then mesure it. take the cylinder bore and subtract it from the piston skirt OD and then you have your bore clearnce.:D

Might be time to take the block & pistons to a machine shop and have it done. ( It's cheeper than buying the tooles)

Ok I put the pistons in the cylinder and could see there wasnt a real big gap on either side but I know you can't just go off looks. Thank you for the advice though.

Ya if you have one calabrated eye ball. Stock clearance is.0012" to .0020". Butt you would know those # if you had a maintance manual.;)

Good luck
