cylinder honing

hey guys i was reading on the form about cylinder honing. I am rebuilding a turbo 4g63 before i do the swap. Now the cylinder walls are in good shape, but should i still get the block honed anyways? I head I can take it in to a shop, but I also heard i can do it myself with a bottle brush, but I wanted to ask you guys to see what i should do.

You need to hone it. If you dont the rings will not seat and you will have low compression and lots of blowby.

Yes you need to get an 85mm hone I do believe.

Its cheap, do it once do it right! Guessing isnt exactly what you want to do on your bottom end! I just paid $75 to have my block honed.

Any machine shop can hone it. but just because its been honed doesnt mean the bores are good. They could be egg shapped from the force of the piston skirt pushing on it over time. Have it mic'd so they can insure that the bores are not egg shaped.

strip the block bare and they will hot tank it to clean it then they will hone it and clean it out once again. you might as well get it decked too. that way you know your head gasket is seating on a flat surface.

no napa wouldnt do it. Take it to a automotive engine rebuild shop.

If you want to build your own engines, anything more than two or three(not always dsm) then I would suggest getting the tools for the job. With the knowledge of the entire process, you know where you can save money on and what requires 'real' machine work.
Such as a re-hone, not exactly needed to be brought to a machine shop if you have yourself a hone and Mic.
I say 3-5 builds because that is honestly how much those tools will cost you, a GOOD torque wrench, micrometer(ID/OD/digital), hones for various oversize, plastigauge etc...

fyi, some napa's do have machine shops attached to them, but it would be blatantly obvious. From my experience, only take your 4g shit to someone that knows 4g's, at the very least IMPORTS. Good'ol boy's shops IMO suck. They either know WTF they are doing or they have no clue.

Best thing to do is take it to a machine shop and let them check out the block and do what is necessary. This is what I have got done on my block and the price I paid.

Deck block 79.00
Check align bore 30.00
Bake tumble block, remove and replace freeze plug, wash block 89.00
Hone block 39.00

a flex and deglazing hone are what i used to use on SBC's, never had a problem with compression, but for your sake, get it taken somewhere.

Locally most of the guys take their machine work to Apex Auto Machine in Bensonville.

Machine shops are usually very busy. Clean out all oil and remove everything. Pull the crank, bearings, pistons, rods, everything! Take off oil pump and all pulleys and gears, should just be the hunk of metal, and you can bring the rods, bearings, etc for the shop to inspect. Its best to let them go what they got to do and not hold them up by having them dismantle everything, plus its $$$.
