cylinder #1 compression stroke?

I am the process of replacing my timing belt and i need to know how to determine if my cylinder #1 is at the compression stroke at tdc

I am a little lost at what your asking.There should be marks on the oil pump housing if i remember right.

The crank mark only shows TDC because it's the cams that make it compression or exhaust stroke.

If the crank mark is lined up and the cam dowel pins are at 12 o'clock with their timing marks aligned then the engine is at TDC compression stroke. You still need to make sure that the oil pump is aligned and in phase since the lower balance shaft is driven off the oil pump. See the timing belt VFAQ for the details.

well i removed the balance shafts anyways but thank you everyone i figured everything out and got my car started for the first time ever since i bought it.
